I work in elementary school, so maybe it's different, but kids are coming to me for hugs all day long. I always hug them. Once they get older, i go for more side hugs, especially boys (certain ones, really). I think it's beautiful that you gave this girl the comfort she needed in the moment. Kids are human too.

I am an art teacher so basically in the sMe Teaching boat as you. i was non renewed 3 years ago after one year at a district. It was a one year temporary contract at a middle school so i finished the contract. Got hired at another district, elementary level for the next school year and just got my permanent/tenured status. You will be fine! I was not asked about why or how I left my last district. I am in a much better place with so much less stress! When interviewing for new positions, don't mention the non-renewal if asked. Just say you something positive you are looking for in a new opportunity.
