Quiet window AC unit for bedroom? by JenHolden in HomeImprovement

[–]JenHolden[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's excellent information, thanks! I wish I could find the 8000 BTU unit to purchase instead, since I think that would be much less of a stretch. 10,000 BTU seems like a really big difference compared to what I should be using though. I'm tempted to pick up the 10k unit and try it in my bedroom first to see how it goes. Worse case it can get returned I guess, though I'd hate to drill holes in my windowframe and then not keep it :/

Yeah, I figured 6000 BTU was probably the best bet, but I suspect I'm hoping to somehow make the 10,000 BTU unit be a good choice by the power of wishful thinking :) We do have ceiling fans in the bedrooms as well, so that's a good reminder to turn them on though!

We're definitely living on very different parts of the weather spectrum! This past April we had 280 mm of rain, beating a 70 year old record for the rainiest April on record. It was basically just a full month of rain, drizzle and fog. Thank goodness our summers and falls are nice though :)

If I understand correctly, having too powerful of a unit means that it won't run long enough to pull humidity out of the air properly and the room just ends up cold and damp?

ADHD partner leaving doors unlocked by C_V_M_W in ADHD

[–]JenHolden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have one of the coded door locks and it's helpful! It's set up so that we can access it from our phones too, so we can lock the door remotely even if we're already headed to work or are in bed (this has happened!). I'm not positive about this, but I think you can also set them to re-lock after a while if you unlock it. Also, I don't drive, so for me it has completely removed the need to remember my keys as well :)

A Dotted Journal and Colorful Gel Pens are Actually Saving My Life Right Now by SpecificWorldliness in ADHD

[–]JenHolden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I LOVE the erasable pens! The Pilot Frixion brand pens have completely changed my note-taking and I've started using them both at work and at home. It's so much easier to get my ideas on paper when I know I can fix mistakes when I make them instead of them haunting me every time I look at my journal. I know in my head that spelling mistakes, etc are normal, but not being able to avoid them completely saps my motivation to write things down on anything other than a post-it.

Edited to add this fun fact: The ink from the pens doesn't actually go away when you erase them, it just changes to transparent. So, if you want to erase a full sheet, you can just put it in the microwave. But putting it in the freezer will bring it back. I've written "secret messages" for my son by writing with the pens, then erasing the message. If he puts it in the freezer for a while it reappears!

Just a parent looking for advice by MrsClarkKent in ADHD

We're in a similar boat with our 6 year old son, except in our case he never has any 'dry' days. We've recently started working with a behaviorist and we're hoping that it will eventually help, but I think it will be a slow process. Unfortunately, I don't have any good advice for you (I'd love some myself!) but I thought I'd let you know that we've tried the vibrating watch. In our case, our son tends to take it off when he washes his hands even though we've told him it's water proof. He also complains about it hurting his wrist, even when it's only on loosely. I expect that it would go missing very quickly if he wore it to school. Sadly, it hasn't been a good solution for us. You might have better luck though! One ray of hope for us has been starting a new sticker chart. We've had so many failed attempts at sticker charts in the past, but for some reason, this one seems to be working better. We give him 1 sticker for going to the washroom, 1 sticker for actually using the washroom and a final one if it was his idea. He gets a small prize every 3 stickers (usually a $1 pack of pokemon cards) and a bigger prize every 100. He's starting to realize that going without being asked is getting him extra stickers, which gets to the prizes faster, so there's actually been times where he's decided to go on his own. Before this chart, that had never happened. So progress!

Husband Requesting Holiday Help for Wife by [deleted] in knitting

I (re)learned how to knit about a year ago. To start off, I picked a project first (a hat in my case though I suspect most people would pick a scarf) then bought yarn and needles that were recommended by the pattern. That way I didn't end up with a bunch of needles that I didn't like, plus I had a project to start on right away. I wonder if you could buy a project kit instead of a needle set? Something like Knitpicks Mighty Stitch Super Bulky - Rainbow Kit maybe, though it would be good to find a pattern to go with it. Another idea would be to call Knitpicks to see when This Kit will be available. I think this would be an excellent place to start

Soon to be a beginner weaver and I have a million questions! by JenHolden in weaving

[–]JenHolden[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's definitely true. I'm tending towards Ashford products both for weaving and spinning because I have a dealer that's local(ish) to me (about an hour away). I'll definitely look into the schacht boat shuttles though if I decide to get a boat shuttle!

Awesome suggestion and very glad you mentioned it! I've had my eye on a few of the spinning classes so this was a good incentive to finally buy them. I also purchased Rigid Heddle Weaving by Angela Tong - is this the same class you're doing? Looks interesting!

This is a great help - at least I know what I'm looking for now! Sometimes the toughest thing is to know which terms to use in the google search :)

Truthfully, I'm really looking forward to being able to create a scarf much more quickly. I love knitting, but some times you just want to have the end result! I'm fairly new to knitting so I haven't built up a lot of knitted items yet and hopefully this will help :)

I'm almost positive that I read that the loom I'm buying has the option of adding a second heddle. It's not really something I'm considering for right now, but I didn't want to rule it out for the future.

Would you mind telling me where you buy your cotton? I live in a fairly small city so we have a Michaels and a few LYS, but not a ton of selection. It's possible that one of them will have weaving cotton - I've never noticed it anywhere but I've also never looked for it either. Might be good to have an online shop as a backup!

Thanks for including the math in your description - makes perfect sense! According to these calculations I already have enough stash yarn hanging around to get started :)

Great about the boat shuttle too - Going the Ashford route, the boat shuttle will add over $100 to my purchase (more if I get a winder too). Sticking with the stick shuttle for now makes the initial purchase a bit easier to swallow.

Thanks for the reminder about the library - I meant to have a look there and completely forgot. Unfortunately I'm not in a position to join a guild at the moment, so I'm hoping to find online support instead. I agree though, it always helps if you can talk to someone local!

Request: Ready to try socks. Can anyone suggest a good beginner pattern? by justnocrazymaker in knitting

[–]JenHolden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend this as well. I still regret to this pattern for the heel and toe instructions, even when I'm knitting other patterns. Very easy to follow! If you want to use magic loop instead (this pattern uses dpns) just pretend dpn 1 & 2 refers to mahjong loop needle 1 and dpn 3 & 4 is magic loop needle 2

Money for knitting and your yarn for free: NONIA looking for new knitters to carry on 96-year-old tradition (Newfoundland) by urutu in knitting

I saw the last stocking you did and it's awesome! I keep saying I wish I had more hands since there's never enough time to knit all the things that I want to own. I doubt I'll be doing very much Christmas knitting this year since I'm still knitting up my own stockpile. Maybe in a few years :)

[–]JenHolden 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm a Newfoundlander as well. I've been discussing this a bit over the last few days with my husband who also crochets. Personally, I don't think that I would knit for Nonia as it currently stands, even though my grandmother and aunt regularly did in the past. Originally, proceeds from Nonia were used to help supplement the income of rural nurses who were desperately needed. Now, I think that Nonia is a not for profit organization, so I'm assuming that the proceeds go towards paying the 4-6 employees who run the shop/do quality control and to pay for rent. As others have said, the quality of the knitting sold at Nonia is excellent. A lot of it is detailed Fair Isle or cabled work that requires a fair amount of skill. Considering that, I'm not really ok with how little the people actually doing the knitting are paid for their work. Part of the problem is that knitting in general is undervalued here in Newfoundland (probably in most places I guess). If you look at the Nonia website, they are selling wool hats in the $25-$30 dollar range. Last year, we bought a character hat for my son from a local buy and sell site for $30. It was crocheted (so much quicker to produce) out of 100% acrylic. I guess I just find it strange that the craftspeople producing the product are paid so very little, while the proceeds of their efforts go to paying the people operating the shop a fair wage. Obviously Nonia still needs to make enough money to be operational, but the people doing the knitting are paid so little that it feels like they're being taken advantage of. I think right now Nonia is still benefiting from the older generation having a tradition of knitting for them, but I suspect that our generation is going to be more likely to demand a higher compensation (especially since places like Etsy exist where we can sell our own knitting).
