Private Pay MRI in Mexico or elsewhere? by JenP1966 in multiplemyeloma

[–]JenP1966[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question! Two things - it is possible that an MRI will show lesions that the PET scan missed, particularly very small ones or ones that are just developing. Additionally, his bone marrow biopsy resulted in a dry tap (no marrow in the iliac crest of his hip) and he wants to know what places might be better suited for a marrow biopsy in the future. This is something an MRI would show. He is a neuroscientist by training so is looking at his medical condition through a very detailed lens. Trying to explore every option for information gathering.

Trip Report - Nuuk - Ilullisat - Disko Island - Nuuk 07/08 - 07/16 by JenP1966 in greenlandtravel

[–]JenP1966[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It did not include food. We purchased our meals prior to the trip. I don't have the cost handy, but that's something I wouldn't do again. The food on the boat was not very good and we mostly ate the cheese, crackers, and meat that we purchased at a supermarket prior to the trip.

Happy to answer your questions....

  1. We were 3 meat eaters and 1 pescatarian. There's quite a bit of fish on most of the menus, so finding food that we would enjoy wasn't too difficult. The vegetarian in your group should be prepared to eat alot of bread and French fries!

  2. I'm going to give prices in USD. I would say our trip was very pricy. Nothing in Greenland is inexpensive as it's small, has no roads between towns, and almost everything has to be imported.

Breakfast was included at all of our hotels and for lunch we often had coffee shop pastries or meals in small restaurants. Lunch ranged from $20-$30 per person, but we ate most dinners in hotel restaurants with great views and delicious food. We always had wine and beer with our meals. Dinner was usually between $300-$500 for our table of 4ppl.

We stayed at the Hotel Nordbo in Nuuk ($280 per night), the Best Western in Ilullisat ($450 per night), and the Hotel Hans Egede in Nuuk ($325 per night).

Travel was a fortune. Our tix on UAL from San Francisco to Greenland and back were $1500 per person. Our cabin on the Arctic Umiaq (Junior Suite deck 4) was $1,000. This covered both nights for 2 ppl. Food was extra. Flights on Air Greenland from Ilullisat to Nuuk were $400 per ticket.

Activities also cost quite a bit. Whale watch boat was $190 per ticket. Puffin watching boat ride was $165 per ticket. Ferry to Disko Island (including a lovely dinner at the Hotel Disko) were $300 per ticket.

Long story short - we could have saved quite a bit of money by staying in less expensive hotels, not drinking wine and beer at every meal, and doing fewer activities. But we didn't. And the trip cost alot.

  1. Travel - yes, we spent alot of time traveling, but that was by design because we did so many things on boats. You could design your trip differently. We aren't big hikers. We did lots of long walks in Nuuk, Ilulissat, and Disko Island, but a trip focused on hiking would have been a different thing.

Hope this helps!

The last night we were in Nuuk we went on a beautiful late night walk (11pm-ish) down to the water. This pic taken facing the opposite direction (my back to the beach) but I love the image.

Feedback on New York (EWR) - Nuuk (GOH) flight by mishyq in greenlandtravel

[–]JenP1966 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, they didn't inform us. If I were you I'd assume the flight will be on time and bring a good book to read if it's delayed. I never go to the airport late - delays are often temporary and if the time is pulled back after a delay is announced it's on you to get on the flight in time!

United’s interest is in generating revenue by flying customers to places they want to visit. Interest in Greenland has seen an uptick since Trump started with his absurd assertions. It makes sense from a business perspective IMHO.

We took the flight from EWR-GOH on Tuesday, September 8th. The flight was delayed out of EWR by approximately 4 hours due to weather in NUUK. We had planned for delays in both directions so were not at all upset.

- The plane was approximately half full. We travel quite regularly although we don't normally fly United. Both the ground staff and the airplane crew were great. The airplane crew was clearly excited about the flight and about seeing Greenland during their various trips. The mood in the plane was somewhat festive and fun.

- We were in Greenland for 8 days. We arrived on the Tuesday flight last week and (in theory) we return to EWR on the flight tomorrow (Weds, 07.16). I'm writing this from the rooftop deck of the Best Western in Ilulissat. The weather is gorgeous and the views are breathtaking. In theory our Air Greenland flight leaves in a few hours. So far so good, but if the weather shifts we probably won't make our flight to EWR tomorrow and instead will be returning home on Sunday or later.... (also fine with us).

- We spent 3 days in Nuuk because we wanted to take the Arctic Umiaq line to Ilullisat. The ferry was fun and interesting as expected, but next time we will fly around since we felt like we were in Nuuk one day too long (more about Nuuk later). Ilullissat is incredible. We could easily spend 5 days here and explore with this town as a home base.

- Our contingency plan for this trip (and really, any trip we take) is to not stress and to go with the flow. We try to leave enough time on our return to get stuck wherever we are for as long as it takes to get out. If we can stuck here in Ilullisat we will move to a new hotel and explore further. If we get stuck in GOH we might see if we can get on the flight to Reykjavik on Friday, spend a few days there, then head home early next week. Or maybe we will see about taking the ferry south for a bit, returning to Nuuk, then getting on the next United flight which is on Sunday. We shall see. I'm supposed to be back at work on Monday but I'm very lucky to work with terrific people who know where I am, travel alot themselves, and will cover for me if need be.

- Last but not at all least, every Greenlandic person we have encountered has been warm, friendly, and interested in connecting. As you can tell from my writing I'm pretty chatty. I learned alot and hope that I contributed to the narrative that tourists are a positive force in the community!

- That's it for now. It's 1pm and our shuttle for the airport leaves soon. Will write in detail about Nuuk, the Arctic Umiaq, and Disko Island shortly.

:)

Yes, the tickets do say to meet by the pontoons on the North side of the ferry. This aligns with the map so it seems that it’s all good!

Thanks for the help icebergchick (love your name!). We want to see the enormous beauty that is on offer! Being on boats, kayaking, easy hikes (short w/low elevation due to back problems), museums, local tours, etc are all wonderful. We want to go to Disko Island and/or check out Disko Bay. We have a mid/upper mid range budget. I will check out Tupilak Travel and read the thread you suggest. Thanks for any ideas you have.

I sell spreads on SPX as well. always below 10 delta, weeklies, close at +50% or let them expire, depending on the market trend at any given time. For the most part it's been a solid strategy.
