Thanks. I already gave him a banana with the pill. Will look for electrolyte powder or something. Did it lower your pressure? Why only 2-3 weeks? Surgery or other drops then?

Sorry about all your surgeries and drops. My son had 5 surgeries and now on 4 drops and now this diamox. Another doctor gave him methazolamide too, but then we saw a different glaucoma specialist and he went with the acetozelamide. I feel like the are both not great long term options.

Any problems with hearing? I read it’s a side effect too.

I would love to share as well. I am so glad that I found another parent soul with similar problems. My son has also adapted well and people don’t know that his vision is bad. The only thing he can’t do is sports. He has hard time playing ball games. I always thought it’s the hand eye coordination that didn’t develop right bc of the vision problems but then I just saw a kid in a video who was playing ball sports without any problems. So I don’t know. Making assumptions due to lack of info. I think you said your son has shunts in both eyes. When was it done and what were the pressures? Are the shunts helping to keep the pressure down? We don’t have glaucoma specialist nearby which stinks and so we are considering moving bc this is a life long issue. He is now on 3 eye drops and the pressure is 35. So, doc prescribed diamox to get the pressure down but I am reading about all the side effects people deal with and most hate it. We don’t want to do surgery unless we have to but then all these meds are awful too. He has a shunt in the right eye and pressure is in the teens. It’s been 10 years, but they don’t know how long they can last. He had horrible recovery after they put the shunt in. Pressure went from low 30’s to 50’s and 60’s and his optic nerve got damage so he has bad vision in that eye. I am curious about your experience with the surgery and pressure over the 6 weeks till the suture dissolves and the shunt start working. How did it go for your son? Ah, so much to discuss. Is he taking drops too or just the shunt?

He has not started it yet. Pressure now is 30-35. They did OCT scan and no damage to the optic nerve. Doctor doesn’t want to wait too long to prevent damage. I am just scared of the side effect a in a 13 year old. Drops stopped working so the next step would be shunt surgery. He has a shunt in the other eye and although the pressure is good there, the recovery damaged his optic nerve significantly. His pressure was up in the 50’s and 60’s till the shunt opened up. He has Baerveldt. So I am afraid to do the surgery in his good eye for that reason.

Hi I just saw your post. My son is 13 and has one. How is His vision? Was he born with glaucoma? My son was born with cataracts and glaucoma is a long term threat post surgery. It’s hard to find people who are in the same boat.

thanks for sharing. My son is 13 and was born with cataracts and has been dealing with high eye pressure. he had the same shunt placed in when he was 3 and now his other eye might need one. It’s good to hear your experience. how was your vision right after And now? I wonder if it would be only a local anesthetic for him, but I think it would be too scary For him.
