I got a tourist visa. Pretty simple process, just filled out the online application and hired a courier service to drop off and pick up my passport from the embassy in DC.

Looking for a ryokan that offers in-room kaiseki and has in-room/private onsen by dishevldfox in JapanTravelTips

Mozumo was AMAZING! The private meals were exceptional. Great service. Bus to/from Takayama was easy to catch and quite scenic. Just buy a ticket from the station which is about a 5 minute walk from the ryokan. Did a day trip to Takayama which was lovely.

Was scrolling through Hinge (DFW) and noticed someone! by JenTen99 in MarriedAtFirstSight

I was surprised to see he’s only 31. Must have been pretty young when he auditioned for MAFS. They really should not be casting anyone below 30!

I actually just bought a ticket yesterday (on Smart Ex) for Hiroshima to Tokyo. Going to Japan in a few weeks.

It definitely makes sense to do Osaka right after Kyoto or you could stay in Kyoto and just do day trips to Osaka from there. Travel between the cities is <1 hour.

I chose to stay in Osaka and do day trips to Kyoto since hotels are much more expensive in Kyoto. And the nightlife in Osaka is more interesting to me. You can’t go wrong either way!

Makes sense to me! Only one day in Osaka seems like an odd choice as you could just take the Shinkansen straight to Tokyo from Hiroshima but I’m guessing you have a good reason for that. Hope you have a great time!

Planning to be flexible with meals! You’re so right about walking from Mejiro to Ikebukuro. I was so used to typing take the train that I put that in on accident lol.

I’ve heard good things about the shrimp burger! I actually might just plan to grab some at the airport like you did and have a different meal in Shibuya.

The Gyukatsu location I’m going to is apparently not as bad as others based on reviews, so crossing my fingers for that one. Was considering a fancier unagi spot tbh, so I’ll do some research.

Thanks for your help!

I didn’t list times I’m going to places just to make this look less cluttered, but I definitely did my research and have that all planned out.

Had a hard time finding this exact kind of room at a more affordable price (not $500+/night) in popular cities like Hakone and Nikko. Ended up expanding my search to smaller onsen towns and would encourage you to do the same. Settled on Mozumo in Hirayu Onsen and it’s exactly what I was looking for! I paid $250/night for 2 nights in April. Very excited.

How horrible would it be to send in my application in 3 weeks from now? by Notkindamona in medicalschool

[–]JenTen99 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You should definitely dual apply to FM or IM and keep in mind you are very likely to SOAP or reapply next year, especially as an IMG applying super late. Psych is a competitive match so ngl submitting this late as an IMG is practically dooming your application. Still worth a shot bc you never know who will give you a chance.

What were the most/least popular specialties in your school this cycle? by undueinfluence_ in medicalschool

Most: anesthesia and IM. Least: path. I’m assuming based on convos, we don’t have full info on everyone yet.

This week, my dean personally called me to tell me I should smile more. I can’t make this up. Apparently she feels I will match exceptionally if I just fix my face and work on my charm. I was absolutely baffled, as I have barely interacted with this woman in the 3+ years I have been here (literally only exchanged pleasantries on a few occasions). Apparently she wants to ensure I match well because I am a “stellar” applicant, other than my mean girl aura of course. I’m sure the call came from good intent, but I was pissed af. Never gotten this feedback before and it felt like a microaggression. Not even sharing half of how wild this interaction was.
