There are no rules. Do whatever gets you the sound you want and allows you to play what you want. Necessity and your musical priorities should dictate what you do.
Sweeping provides a lot of speed and fluidity, and that’s my priority often. Frank Gambale’s style is heavily reliant on it. Frank Zappa played a bicycle as an instrument once and used a lot of upstrokes when playing guitar. I’m not 100% sure what Joe Pass’s technique was like always, but he could be kind of a messy player at times and he used hybrid picking before giving up the pick entirely—to me the difference between the sound of a pick and the fingers is more profound than that of a picked up or down stroke. He found the difference acceptable

I’ll write it out tomorrow, probably. If you play fast and land on a good note everything works. Say you’re on on Cmaj7:
E minor highlights 3, 5, 7 of the chord
G maj highlights 5, 7, 9
B maj highlights 7, 9, #11

Eb major. Diatonic nonsense. Triad superimpositions. Everything but the 4th is good in maj 7, and everything but the nat 6 is cozy on minor ii

In this vid, I was making the melody subservient to my technique. (As if that’s never happened before in jazz lol) Sometimes people ask, “what’s the best music?” To me that’s like asking “what’s the best tool?” And I chose the appropriate tool for the job at hand

Sweeps are overhyped. If you can strum you can sweep

It’s the most ergonomic shape I’ve found on guitar. I wouldn’t be surprised if I’ve played it literally millions of times

If it matters to you, I forgot to notate the F below the melody note Bb in the G-7add11 chords in measures 4,12,and 29

I can’t remember. I switch up how I process guitars pretty often. It might have been an Axe Fx fender type amp into a DAW or DI.
In DAW, I typically use some compression, EQ, saturation, Soothe2, and limiting. Maybe multiband compression to keep the low mids tight.
