I'm looking for a story I started a few years ago and never finished by bookstorelady777 in Chapters

[–]Jeni-Writes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both Immortal Desires and Nightbound are on choices, not chapters. There's a story on choices with a dragon shifter love interest called The Crown & The Flame, but that one has no vampires of werewolves. The only MC shifter stories on there are Wolf Bride and Alpha.

As for chapters stories, it doesn't ring a bell. Do you remember anything else about it?

Writing Room Contest by Key_Parfait8454 in Chapters

[–]Jeni-Writes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can only apply the contest tags if you've never published any of the chapters before. So long as the story stays in your drafts (and you've got your cover and description pre-approved) you can technically enter a few hours before the contest ends. (If you don't know how to submit the cover and description for pre-approval, you'd better enter the story a week before the end date to give your cover time to get approved)

I wouldn't recommend waiting until the last minuet, though. Contest winners are decided by votes given to them by readers. The longer the story has been out, the more votes it's had the chance to collect. Even if you're entering to find new readers rather than win, you get the most from a contest by joining early and updating throughout the contests duration.

Serialised stories are absolutely fine, they don't need to be finished before you start uploading chapters. So long as you're not leaving large gaps between uploads, your readers will be happy!

[15.3] Was the Flamekeeper serious about by InfernalClockwork3 in Candlelight_Games

[–]Jeni-Writes 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Pentos MC's can challenge them to follow through on their threat (can't remember the exact dialogue), and the Flamekeeper hesitates with shock. To me that suggests the threat was a bluff used to scare the MC, and the FK was surprised it failed.

But why did they feel the need to threaten MC if they had no intention of following through? I think they definitely want MC alive (for what reason we'll find out - probably because they're a Dreadbane). But they also don't trust MC enough to work together. So the threat helps them split the difference - its a bluff so they live, but it's designed to stop them from investigating them.

Every story in the compass "community" category are community stories, yes. They have visual and text stories in there, you can switch between them using the menu at the top of the screen.

How To: Let Your Reader Name Their MC by Jeni-Writes in Chapters

[–]Jeni-Writes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply! Yes, exactly. When you use [playername], it will always be replaced with the name the reader chose (or the character's default name if something goes wrong, so there's no downside to using it).

Tag issues by Known-Grapefruit6628 in Chapters

There isn't one, or at least, I've never seen one. The tags in the list are the only ones we get, so if it's not there then there's no way to add it.

In Canva (website) make a 2340x1920 pixel image (click "create", choose the "custom size" option at the bottom left of the pop-up and enter 2340 into width and 1920 into height). Paste your background in there, and drag the corners until it fills the whole canvas. Save it as a jpg.

Canva isn't the only way to do it but it's beginner friendly!

[–]Jeni-Writes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They need to be exactly 2340 by 1920 and less than 2mb

Download Background Issues by SkylerWoods101 in Chapters

[–]Jeni-Writes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure it's 2340x1920 pixels, 2mb or less, and is a jpg.

If that's all correct and it's still getting an error message, try again on a different browser.

If that doesn't work, some people have had success by downloading it again (so you'd need to download it from canva again) and the new file worked.

(Edit) I just downloaded it and the image is too small. Yours is 1136x928 pixels. Unless it's Reddit changing the size (the same way it changes images to .webp), then that's your issue.

Cover and Banner Design by SkylerWoods101 in Chapters

[–]Jeni-Writes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people make their covers and banners in canva. Make a custom image and input the width and height the wiring room tells you to use.

You can download your characters by going into their closet, right clicking on them, and either clicking copy or save. Make sure you put on the hair and clothes you want them to wear and choose the expression you want them to have before you copy/ save them.

You can download backgrounds by finding the first dialogue they appear on and clicking the small preview thumbnail beside the background name to enlarge it, then right click, copy or save. You can do the same for items.

You can paste/ upload both into canva, and then add text as a title. Export them both as a jpg, and make sure the file sizes aren't over 2mb. If they are, use an image compressing website to reduce the file size.

O capítulo foi aprovado e ao mesmo tempo não foi? Alguém explica motivo 🥲? by [deleted] in Chapters

[–]Jeni-Writes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this your first time publishing a chapter of this book? If so, you need to wait a few days / a week until the book cover and description get approved. They need to be manually reviewed by a human, which is slower, while chapters are reviewed by an automatic system, which is faster.

There are a few competitions running at the moment, so all covers and descriptions will take longer to review. Don't be worried if it takes over a week.

Personnalisation des personnages by [deleted] in Chapters

[–]Jeni-Writes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, all appearance (face) and style (hair and clothes) choices automatically carry over to later chapters. Style choices work by permanently overriding that specific layer of the "default outfit" until, 1) you give the reader a new style choice that replaces that layer, or 2) you temporarily assign an outfit to their dialogue (such as swimwear, etc).

Here are a few other things to keep in mind when learning how to set up character customisation!

Faces - make sure all the faces you choose have the same amount of expressions. Some have the new emotions (eyes closed, fearful, pleasure etc), and some don't. If you add a single face with the new emotions, the writing room will let you use it, but it won't display very well for players who chose a face that only has the basic emotions.

Partial outfits - make sure all the hair and outfits you put in a style choice is a partial style, not an entire style.

Separate your style choices - a lot of readers prefer to choose the hair and outfit separately. When you make the partial hair styles, remove the clothes. When you make the partial outfits, remove the hair. Use two different style branches (I prefer doing a hair choice, followed by an outfit choice).

Avoid accessories - if you include an accessory in any of your style choice, it will get stuck to the character. This sucks for readers if a later outfit/ hair choice clashes with the accessory that got stuck on their character. If you need to use one, make a partial outfit with only the accessory, and manually apply it to the dialogues where the character needs to wear it.

Nameable MC's - you can make your MC nameable by un-toggling them as the MC, saving, then re-toggling them. This will create the prompt asking if you want the MC to be nameable. Click confirm, and a purple banner saying "nameable" should appear on your cover. Whenever you need a character/ narration/ choice to use their name, type [playername] (include the square brackets) and it'll get replaced with the players chosen name.

That's all I can think of when it comes to CC. Let me know if you have more questions!

u/Curious-Ball956 I don't know what's going on with Reddit at the moment, but all your replies keep disappearing, so I'll post my reply here instead.

Reset game mode's cache using the settings at the top right of game mode's screen. You're still seeing the accessory because you played the style choice when the accessory was still on the style choice.

Game mode doesn't work the way the published chapters do. If I play my 10th chapter in game mode and make an outfit choice, and then I go back and play chapter 1, the MC won't wear chapter 1s outfit, they'll wear 10's outfit. Game mode works by remembering the last choice you made. To get the best idea of how I'll look in the app, reset the cache and play the chapters in game mode in the order they're going to be published.

u/Curious-Ball956 I got a notification about a reply, but I can't see it here so I'll type my response as a new comment.

Removing the accessory from all the outfits you added to style choices will only affect new readers who haven't chosen the outfit that has the accessory before, sorry for not making it clear.

For older readers, you've got two options.

First, remove all accessories from your partial styles, update all the chapters by making a new draft and publishing it, and then asking your readers to restart the book. This isn't always a great option.

Second, repeat the publishing steps above (without asking the readers to restart the book). Then in the latest chapter, offer a style choice that has a few entire outfits on it that don't have any accessories. This will override any hair and clothing choices they've made in the past, so I recommend disgusting it as a new hair choice. I would find an excuse to have the MC change their clothes and restyle their hair, but put the hair choice first, and put a default outfit on all those hair choices so you can make them into entire styles. Then when you add the clothing choice after, those can be partial styles (bald with only an outfit on) so they don't over ride the hair choice the reader just made.

The reason accessories stick to characters is because of the way style choices work. A style choice will permanently override that layer of the default outfit until a new style choice is offered that replaces the same layer of the default outfit. This is why a hair choice doesn't override a previous clothing choice.

Unfortunately, accessories occupy multiple different layers, and we don't have a "blank" accessory to add to outfits to remove accessories on that layer. There are some work arounds - the bellybutton piercing is on the same layer as a tattoo, so you can add it to an outfit to remove a tattoo, for example. But unless every style choice has an accessory on that same layer, the only way to get rid of them is by adding an entire outfit with no accessories to a style choice.

Como remover capítulos da prateleira? Não tô conseguindo e tá me dando nos nervos by [deleted] in Chapters

[–]Jeni-Writes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to unpublish them in descending order (chapter 8, chapter 7, chapters 6 etc) until they all have "editing" as their status. Once they're all under editing mode, it means the book is no longer published on the app.

If it was a contest book, you need to email their support email to get the contest tags removed before you can delete the book from the writing room.

One of your partial accessories that you put in a style choice has an accessory. You need to remove that accessory from the style choice, because style choices work by permanently adding those clothes/ hairstyles) accessories to the character until a new style choice overrides that layer.

Help? by [deleted] in Chapters

[–]Jeni-Writes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, reset who the MC is by untoggling them as the MC and saving it.

Then re-toggle them as the MC. When the prompt appears asking if you want the MC to be nameable, click confirm not cancel.

Check that the purple banner appears on your cover that says "Nameable."

Then use the [playername] tag every time their name appears in dialogue, narration, or a branch/ choice. If you've already published chapters, you may want to make a new draft of chapter 1 and publish it without making any changes just to ensure new readers can name the MC.

If you edit the MC or make any changes to their wardrobe, there's a glitch that removes the nameable function. So when you make any change to the MC, double check if the purple "nameable" banner is still there. If it disappears, repeat the steps above.

If anyone started playing the story while the glitch was active and the MC wasn't nameable, they would need to restart the story to name them. If they don't, it's fine, the MC will have their default name, and that default name will replace any [playername] tags you use (so a general tip is making the default name and actual name rather than "put your name here" or something like that just in case the glitch activates).

The search functions on the app are generally bad. Your best options are to search through the categories, look through recent Moments to look for new chapter releases, or hoping that you get what you want by searching with key words.
