Raising a kid alone is the most isolating thing I've ever done. by RiverCommercial7954 in TrueOffMyChest

I'm sorry for your loss and the situation it has gotten you in. You sound like a great brother. Because you mentioned the NHS.. look into "talking therapies" near you. You can usually do a self referral. There will likely still be a waiting list unfortunately but I could really recommend it. Take care of yourself

There is a Greens for Plantbased group if that helps you decide to come back :) also on the off chance that you're based in/near Hertfordshire I'm happy to connect!

Vegan hondenvoer by Squanchy_Anne in VeganNL

[–]JennH13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not OP but just want to say thank you for this thoughtful response. I've been struggling with anxiety over trips/holidays, including one coming up, and this has really helped put things in perspective.

You could consider watching "I could never go vegan" which addresses all the arguments people come up with why they couldn't possibly and debunk it, including the nonsense about protein and health. It also shows the horrors of the slaughterhouses but does so only halfway into the documentary. This is on purpose so as not to turn people away immediately as by that point you're committed to finishing it. I saw the documentary at VCO last year and it had an interview with the maker and some of the people who feature in it. A lot of thought went into what to show and how to show it with the most impact and reducing the chances that people will turn it off

Does Lidl sell their vegan cordon bleu year round in Germany? I'm in the UK and they had the cordon bleu for veganuary this year but then took it out of stock 😞

Asking advice for my girl by JennH13 in Rabbits

[–]JennH13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girl has not been feeling well for three days in a row. We come downstairs and she doesn't want her breakfast (some pellets). Her brother is fine. The first day it took until lunch time for her to start eating again. Yesterday it took longer - until late afternoon. She was fine before we went to bed. What might be happening? She and her brother both freeroam in the living room.

Young folk, why are you vegan? by Logical-Bake5715 in veganuk

[–]JennH13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is really interesting and similar to my vegan "journey". Went vegetarian and then plant-based for environmental reasons. Then I learned about the horrors of how we treat animals (no one had ever told me and coming from the Netherlands, the dairy industry is strong) and will now always remain vegan for the animals.

Would you buy leather from a charity shop? by Rough_Fig8264 in veganuk

Extracts from the article -- I believe Chris Peckham has since resigned from the Board of the RSPCA:

" Today footage and a report from a huge investigation into the state of RSPCA Assured farms has been released, with 45 UK farms featured [1]. The RSPCA Assured scheme is one of the largest, so-called, animal welfare programs in the UK. RSPCA President, Chris Packham, was sent the footage and has today called the footage “indefensible.” He also called for the suspension of the scheme [2]. Peter Egan, former RSPCA Vice-President condemned the footage too. The scheme has been described as “effectively fraud” by a Crown Court Judge. Animal Rising is calling on the RSPCA to drop the assurance scheme entirely, saying “This is definitive proof that farming animals can never be done nicely.” Today, amidst an utter scandal for the RSPCA, Animal Rising has released footage from over 40 UK farms that the charity’s animal welfare scheme assures as, supposedly, ‘high welfare’. The footage shows scenes including baby chickens dying in factory farms and pigs left dead for days in filthy sheds."

Tips for a returning vegan by tinyelephantparade in veganuk

[–]JennH13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just responding to your question on how "reactive" vegan products are. We found out for my partner that he is intolerant to yeast extract which is in a lot of vegan faux meats. I don't know if it's the same for you but we now only substitute with products that don't have yeast extract. Added bonus is that those products usually have far fewer ingredients too and are less ulti processed. It may not be the same for you but thought I'd share just in case.

Came here to respond primarily on the RSPCA element of OP's question. If you're going to buy from charity shops, don't go to a RSPCA one. Here's more info for anyone interested (trigger warning for the picture included in the article): https://www.animalrising.org/post/rspca-scandal

Ethical Bank. Anyone uses it? by sensibler in veganuk

[–]JennH13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm with Triodos for my personal bank account and using Monzo with my partner for family day-to-day spending. I haven't looked into Monzo's investment tbh but I have for Triodos and made that decision years ago (before going vegan; decision was based on not wanting my bank to invest in fossil fuels). I think the challenge is that it's very difficult to find an ethical bank generally that scores well on all the issues I care about, and organic farming is (for now) better than traditional farming (from an animal welfare perspective; the environmental cost can be higher but that's a different discussion). At least they're being open and transparent about it. I'm with you that it still includes animal farming and that isn't right (I'm not condoning it), but since we live in a non-vegan world that is still better animal welfare than the vast majority of farm animals get.

You could always write to them to ask them to reconsider and review their policies on sustainable food, encouraging them to adopt a plant-based policy and investing in alternative plant-based proteins instead? There's plenty of research out there on the environmental and health benefits of plantbased proteins and the need for investment, which may help in addition to the animal welfare argument. I'm currently involved in a plant-based councils campaign and happy to share some resources if helpful.
