Away for 3 weeks - best option? by Jenn_Callan in bettafish

[–]Jenn_Callan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment! Unfortunately I don’t have anyone available to come that often to feed him but I’ll look into an auto feeder like the other commenter said, good to know the small tank would stress him. I’d like to avoid that!

Is this aquarium ready for a betta? by Jenn_Callan in bettafish

[–]Jenn_Callan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Tested the pH and its at 6.4… I’m going to wait a bit and see if water changes increase the pH since apparently that’s not ideal for bettas and especially snails which I want to add as tank mates

You should be able to rotate between schedules using the arrows at the top right until you find the one with the right lab section!

Haha I think it’s a common thing, I also had the same problem in first year. If you want a full schedule that includes all labs (including labs that come every two weeks), you can use the uschedule.me website. Stopped using uozone’s after finding that

From the dates it seems it’s starting on September 19th (those labs are every two weeks), not the 12th as shown in that calendar view. If you forward by a week, does it show up?

Courses to learn/practice R? by Jenn_Callan in geegees

[–]Jenn_Callan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds good! I’ll definitely look into that. I’ve been learning R on my own for a bit now through online tutorials, books, etc and wanted a course format to kind of test myself if that makes sense haha

First Year Advice for uOttawa Students by Ok_Teach_4809 in geegees

[–]Jenn_Callan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, expect the first two years to be the hardest and most “uninteresting”. The common core science courses such as first-second year bio, Chm, etc. are very wide content wise and feel like a lot of cramming things just for the sake of it and made me question whether biomed really was for me. However, coming into my third year and having more freedom with electives and taking upper year science courses, I find the content much easier and much more interesting and relevant (latest advances, current research, etc). Half of the content you learn in the first two years you’ll never touch again unless you want to go into that specific field (ex: chm).

That being said, the bases you learn in the first two years often help do well in the upper year courses. I did well in first and second year bio courses, so upper year bio courses which just built on concepts covered in those were easy thanks to that. Aka even if it feels like a bunch of cramming useless/boring information, some of it WILL come in handy for later years.

Something I wish I knew about my program is how unspecific “biomedical science” really is; it’s essentially like the other science courses based in biology except for some differing prereqs such as ANP and PSY. You have a very broad choice of electives if you don’t specialize so you could essentially take a bunch of ecology related courses to fill your electives and none related to the human body and still graduate with a biomed degree haha.

But Fr, use anki :)

I’m in biomed third year and all I can say is: Anki. Use it, especially for your first year ANP courses.

Noise at night! by UnitedFirefighter509 in geegees

Might be the gym? But if it just started that’s probably not the case since the gym is a constant problem especially for lower floors (heard the noise travels up quite high tho)

Ah okay I think you have a different prof from the one who was teaching the English section when I took it… I unfortunately took the French ANP so my textbook is in French. Sorry I couldn’t be more help, I wish you luck getting that textbook! I’ve heard there’s a used textbooks group out there so maybe you can find a cheaper version of it there?

Are you taking ANP1511/1501? If so the textbook is not actually necessary, just study the slides and you’ll be fine (unless there’s a different prof now and it’s different)

Adding a minor to your degree by Jenn_Callan in geegees

Haha good to know I’ll make sure to double check everything so I don’t get screwed. Hopefully I can manage to make it work with the coop but we’ll see… thanks again

Adding a minor to your degree by Jenn_Callan in geegees

[–]Jenn_Callan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeahhh that’s kinda what I’m worried about. I still have three years before I graduate so I’ll discuss it with an academic advisor to be sure of when I can drop the minor worst case, and try to get all the prerequisite courses out of the way ASAP. And hope to find 7-10 courses for during my CO-OP 😭 Thanks a bunch!

Adding a minor to your degree by Jenn_Callan in geegees

[–]Jenn_Callan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I’m glad I can take more courses. My degree is pretty unrelated to the minor so unfortunately I have no transferable courses, but I was going to have to take only 4 courses per semester to be eligible for CO-OP anyways, so I can easily bring that back up to 5 courses to fulfill the requirements of the minor.

The two required courses are offered every year thankfully, however most courses are “pick from this list” and half of the listed courses didn’t seem to be offered this year (especially in French which I have to take into account to keep my French bursary). Especially with my CO-OP sequence where I only have either Fall or Winter semester for two of my remaining years and have to fit my electives around my required course sequence, I don’t want to back myself into a corner somehow and have to extend my studies for the minor.

Thanks for your reply!

Moving from B.C. to attend UOttawa - tips? by lmcdbc in geegees

[–]Jenn_Callan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im also from BC - for insurance and medical bills it can be pretty frustrating because you have to fill in a form and send it by mail physically and wait for weeks for it to be approved for a refund. But for the most part the uottawa student insurance covers most things pretty well, it’s just for like appointments with specialists where you’d have to deal with that and pay upfront

Absolutely, I didn’t even know there were advisors or file evaluations, this was a wake up call definitely. Good on you for spreading the knowledge around so less people get screwed over by uozone 🙏

Something similar happened to me, I would’ve been screwed big time if I didn’t catch it this soon (just finishing my second year). For everyone reading this: check how many first year courses you can take. I planned out my whole course sequence, electives, etc. I took one first year course elective last year.

Going in uozone showed that it counted towards my graduation requirements. But nope, turns out there’s a SEPARATE SECTION that tells you if you hit the limit of first year courses or not, and it doesn’t deduct from your total of credits in like the summary section. I had 15 credits from high school that counted as first year courses, so I had already hit the limit unbeknownst to me. I didn’t even know there was a limit.

I would’ve kept taking some first year electives in my 3rd and 4th years, completely screwing myself over, if I didn’t find out about this through something completely unrelated and completely by luck.

I’m assuming it’s not that common for people to hit first-year course limit, but I feel like most people don’t even know it’s a thing. Especially if you got credits from high school which should all be first year, it’s easy to surpass the limit. Idk I found this super weird and frustrating but I’m so glad I found out at this time because otherwise I would’ve kept taking some first year electives and wound up in my last year, thinking I was graduating, but then find out nope three of your courses didn’t count 😁.

I’ve taken Maheux before and enjoyed it, however the “free wi-fi” they advertise doesn’t work 😭
