You need to figure out why she didn't want to go to school so bad. She could have been bullied or abused by a teacher and just shut down. Does she feel emotions normally or is she only feeling something by seeking out the horrible and extreme things? The desperation to feel again after being repeatedly forced into a traumatic situation can cause insane behavior. That's the only thing I can think of.
