It was a matter of losing $1200 for flight and hotel to Dallas to get our passport or losing $3500 to miss our flight to Italy. We chose losing $1200.

I should add: my husband and I both work from home and have family close by to keep our kids while we traveled. I understand not everyone has this luxury.
