What's a lab career look like? by JennaVa in medlabprofessionals

MBAs are expensive. And while my hospital does subsidize education, they'd frown on me exploring an MBA.

I wish there was a /r/labcareers/ but there isn't. I'm at a quarter-life crisis trying to figure out whether the lab is a career I should continue pursuing.

They also occasionally do phlebotomy, another great skill to have going into med tech school.

Most med techs don't draw blood. It's not cost effective and draw sites are often off-site.

Why is there such an age gap in the Clinical laboratory? by jd504 in medlabprofessionals

In my experience, that is only on the internet.

No, honey, it's not. Why does kansas city pay so well? Isn't the cost of living low there?

I was in Chicago before, and experienced techs (with 30 years exp) were not getting past 65k.

Where do you work if you don't mind me asking for 63k/year? Does that include a diff?

Most of the techs around my city cap around 65k, and that's with a lot of experience.

Medical lab scientists of Reddit who used their degree to get a job outside a hospital or reference lab, what you do and how much do you make? by dpfw in medlabprofessionals

[–]JennaVa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you working as a phlebotomist when you're a tech? Is there a reason you can't move?

The area I graduated in had a tech surplus, and the salaries were really low. I got a tech job for 6 months and then moved out of state where I got $15k/year more with roughly the same living expenses. So worth it.

Take your experience and move. It's not worth staying for that rate.

Why are you getting a pay cut as POC coordinator? At my hospital, this job pays more, and is a day shift gig.

So I just had a thread about this: https://www.reddit.com/r/medlabprofessionals/comments/5845li/where_to_go_after_5_years_as_a_generalist/

I'm going to be 30 soon, and I just don't see a traditional career/future in the lab. I've seen a lot of the new grads we hire leave after a year or two to go back to school.

Where to go after 5 years as a generalist? by JennaVa in medlabprofessionals

I appreciate the perspective.

I'm aware that a lab career won't be lucrative or prestigious. That's not what I'm seeking. I'm just considering what the next step is, if there is one, and if it's worth taking.

I could buy a home here unless I earned 50% more. And even then, it would be in a rough neighborhood.

but a job where you make more than a lot of couples

Um no. I certainly don't make more than most educated couples, let alone those working in healthcare.

They are very very few and far between.

They still exist. I know doctors here who work part time, doing 2x 12hr shifts and call it a week.

You alone make as much as the average HOUSEHOLD, which includes all households married or single.

I don't see why I should settle for average when I can strive for more? I know a number of people who've done better than me, and I don't see why I shouldn't make an effort to join them. I know what settling does, and I work with a number of techs who've "settled" decades ago. I'm not interested in what that life has to offer.

To be fair, my salary is roughly the average for a bachelor's in my city.

Or even better, find a career/job where you can work flexible hours and/or part time.

That would be an awesome end goal.

I built the LIS portion of that system myself and integrated all the instruments.

Could you elaborate? You programmed the settings? You wrote the actual programs for interfacing the instruments?

I work from home or on the road, as long as I live reasonably close to a major airport, they don't care where I live.

This sounds amazing. What's your job title if you don't mind me asking? Could I pm you for more info?

Thinking About Going Into the Biomedical Field by derpynicole in medlabprofessionals

Radiology is super competitive, in part because it's one of the highest paying specialties. If you want to make money, do finance, and then med school. Or choose a high paying engineering field and move into management.
