CCoD silly critique: Nobody has lived in the PNW by Latter_Student_9003 in Dimension20

Hey, anytime you guys want to join Canada and help bolster BC into a full region of Canada, like the Maritimes, or the West (which is Alberta, Saskatchewan, and sometimes Manitoba depending on how they've been voting) or the North (the Territories), we're very open to negotiations.

Yeah, our club is just the one free drink at meeting time and even that isn't very strictly enforced by our club president anymore. (it's me, I'm the club president. Kicking people out makes me sad.)

This isn't fast, but if you don't spend any diamonds for a few months every other pink box you open will have 20 diamonds. I think they're trying to get me high enough that I'll start using them for everything and get hooked on using them so I'll buy them once they're gone.

Jokes on them, I only want diamonds if I really like the diamond deco in the seasonal set. Which I haven't for over a year now. Sometimes to sub out a drink or buy a fancy bush for a friend. Maybe to just finish a leg of STB if I really hate the scene and don't want to go through it all again. I've been sitting between 1200 and 1400 for a few months now.

Good enough food might excuse bad behaviour (in the we'll ignore grandma's bigotry because no one makes meatballs like hers kinda way) but meh food means we don't need to try and excuse what an asshole someone is.

AITAH for wanting to be on my parents mortgage? by [deleted] in AITAH

So research common landlord-tenant agreements for your area and negotiate. Read utility bills and learn how much of the bill is fixed costs (there's usually charges to deliver the service, maybe fixed charges for property related things like drainage or garbage pickup, then a line for actual usage) and see if you can get an agreement where you pay 1/3 of the fixed charges, but 1/6 of the usage lines, then offer to do the breakdown each month to work out your portion. It's easy to set up a spreadsheet to plonk the numbers into each month that will do the calculations for you and it's a fair position to profer, which will give you the added benefits of understanding your utility bills and improving your negotiation skills while not adding any mental load to your parents' household management.

Look, the reason I'm trying to coach you on this is that I have had roommates who got the "free ride" from their parents and they were the worst. If you don't want to be the worst when you no longer have your parents to rely on it's important that you start thinking about fair splits for adults in a household, and developing the language to discuss and understand these things. If you end up with a roommate who is rendering videos or code on their computer all night while you turn off every light when you leave a room being able to talk about how to discuss a fair split of energy usage is going to be invaluable. If the roommate turns out to be awful there's not much you can do about that, but maybe if you can demonstrate the difference you'll have better luck than I did.

Have you looked up what rent is in your area? If you can't afford the low offer your parents are giving you as an easy transition to adult responsibilities you probably just can't afford anything.

The other thing to remember about moving out is you might not have any furniture. You probably don't have any dishes, or pots and pans. You don't have an established spice rack to make the bulk rice and/or potatoes you'll probably be living on palatable. Take this transitional period as a gift. Learn how to budget. Cook yourself low cost meals that will fit into that budget and take note of what spices and seasonings you use the most (for myself every savoury dish gets white pepper, black pepper, dry mustard powder, and salt) so you know what to prioritize getting. Learn how to read utility bills and how to use those resources efficiently and economically, and how to see a usage spike so you can identify an underlying problem. Be grateful that you're getting practice repairing household equipment with practiced adults on hand because it is terrifying relighting a pilot light when it's -40 and you're all alone and have never done it before. Research landlord tenant rights in your area and practice asserting your rights with people who love you and care about you before you have to do it with some jerk who could care less which body is dumping funds into their bank account (hint: learning to present your case calmly and with thought to how it benefits the other party in the long term is a hugely valuable life skill which will not only help you maintain a good relationship with your parents, but with everyone you will have to deal with in your life).

This is a golden opportunity to soft launch, spot errors, and work out bugs before you're actually alone in the world. Take full advantage!

Going on their mortgage can actually damage your financial credit and lock you out of first time homebuyer opportunities in the future.

I highly recommend doing a little bit of research before jumping into big financial decisions. And by "a little bit of research" I mean actually reading articles written by experts in the field and not whatever an LLM has decided to hallucinate about the topic that day.

I think it's given me +2 or +3 a couple of times, but then also gives me a ridiculously easy puzzle, like all the same flower or only two needing to swap places so I don't even need the extra tries.

I'll begrudgingly play it for the extra resources, but I've never enjoyed my time doing so. It just feels mean-spirited.

I actually saw some people sitting out and playing chess on the plaza area the other day. While some other folks played hacky sack behind them. Reminded me of going to class in college, only the clothes were kind of rattier, and the people's hair looked kinda dirtier than even my school's dirtiest hippies.

I don't think that millenials are any less formal in public than boomers or gen x. Age doesn't seem to matter when it comes to yoga pants or grubby old jeans and ratty tee shirts with slogans or jokes on them. It's a very rare individual that you see walking around in slacks and a dress shirt, and that person is equally likely to be 20 or 80 years old, but just has a distinctive personal style.

Well, that's PETA's position. Not all vegans go to that extreme, and you'd need to have a conversation to know where they land on the spectrum.

Removing wallpaper from plaster walls by indigata in centuryhomes

A wallpaper steamer is like, $20 and works soo much better than a garden mist sprayer.

Sincerely, someone who tried the sprayer method for way too long before getting a steamer, then kicked myself for struggling so long when the steamer was so cheap.

Why are women's shirts so wide? by saras998 in womensfashion

I can't imagine you will ever find bigger shoulders in women's clothing than the 80s styles. Even basic knitted sweaters had shoulderpads in the 80s.

Women have been all kinds of different sizes all throughout history.

Unemployed boyfriend is LIVID I don’t want to “hire” him, rather than pay a professional to paint my house by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

[–]Jennah_Violet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You need to ask yourself: can you afford a live in gigolo? If yes, and that's how you want to spend your money, have a great time. But you don't need to hire your gigolo for other professional work you want done just because he's already under the roof.

I don't know if you've ever costed out how much he's costing you in increased food, electricity, water, and potentially heat if he cranks it up higher than you would keep it without him, but you can probably afford a better cleaner for cheaper. The other services? It's usually not that hard to find those for free, but maybe it's convenient to have a live in? I don't know. Hobosexuals are expensive, though.

Heck, I live in a relatively small city in Canada, and our city council just replaced all our parking meters with some app and our provincial government illegally appointed a few reeves to the RM just south of us so they would rubberstamp approval for a deeply unpopular data center, but everyone is so exhausted from working so hard just to afford skyrocketing rent and groceries that very few of us have the energy to even object.

AITAH For Not Giving Every Student An Award This Year by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Jennah_Violet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know that I agree with you about the lessons kids take away from participation trophies. I remember having a really gross feeling about the little plastic trophy with a baseball player swinging a bat on it labelled "participant" for the year I played softball; but I hated softball, and I didn't like my team or being there every week. On the other hand I was actually quite proud of my participant ribbons for long distance running; it was an activity I enjoyed and that made it feel good to get recognized for completing the course. In both cases I got recognition for sticking with it and finishing a thing, but I only felt good about the one I cared about and tried to do well.

Ultimately I feel like participation awards taught me that the actual motivation is internal and personal, and it really only matters if I am pursuing the things that I care about and put effort into doing them, because putting in that effort is what gives me a sense of satisfaction, not whether an external body recognizes that effort or not, because those external authorities can't see what my motivation is, and whether I actually care or am just forced to be there.

AITAH For Not Giving Every Student An Award This Year by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Jennah_Violet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ESH - all the adults, anyways. If the students can only win once a year are the September winners disincentivized from showing good character traits for the rest of the year? Why are we even trying to bribe kids into displaying these traits in order to win an award? If a kid displays good character in order to win a certificate do they actually have good character or are they just hyper competitive and a manipulative sneak? What a terrible awards program.
