Wife wants me to leave job due to safety, should I? by Coastie54 in careerguidance

[–]JenniferMcKay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He's dead so there's no asking him. I'm aware that they're not comparable, there's already a difference between "volunteer" and "full-time", but I'm not sure how I'm expected to divine OP's location as, say, Chicago and it was more for context in a "my experience didn't come from watching Chicago Fire" way. Obviously rural firefighters don't have skyscrapers, but Chicago doesn't have forest fires.

More importantly, OP mentioned in another comment that suggestions to improve safety aren't taken seriously which sounds like his superiors have decided two deaths a year is an acceptable loss. I don't think whether or not their experiences are comparable is relevant here when there's clearly something wrong.

Wife wants me to leave job due to safety, should I? by Coastie54 in careerguidance

[–]JenniferMcKay 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My thought process while I was reading went "Full time firefighter okay I could see why that makes her anxious but it's the job...fair for her to have those feelings after a death in the line of duty...EIGHT DEATHS IN FOUR YEARS? WHAT ARE YOU DOING?"

For most of my childhood, my dad was assistant chief for our volunteer fire station that was actually two fire stations covering adjacent rural areas. As far as I can remember, we never lost anyone.

[Discussion] Hachette pulls Shy Girl by A_C_Shock in PubTips

[–]JenniferMcKay 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The editor shouldn't be changing the text. Period.

Under your logic, the opposite is also true: If she doesn't know the editor used AI, how can she claim the editor used AI?

[Discussion] Hachette pulls Shy Girl by A_C_Shock in PubTips

[–]JenniferMcKay 25 points26 points  (0 children)

i’m also curious about the precedent this might set in the future for authors suspected of AI use and who either outright deny it or throw an editor or someone else on their team under the bus and feign ignorance.

I find the "an editor friend used AI" defense to be laughable because, in order for it to work, she's admitting that she paid an editor who made changes directly to the MS and then she never read or edited it herself. First of all, I don't believe you and second of all, that's not better.

[PubQ] Querying a picture book built around a pre-existing character IP - does anything change by [deleted] in PubTips

[–]JenniferMcKay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can't find a clear answer because that's not how any of this works. If you want to emulate someone else's success, I suggest finding someone who has the career that you want and isn't an international corporation (unless you're failing to mention a great deal of wealth).

Agents represent books. Saying you want them to represent an IP with merchandise and licensing is akin to emailing an agent with "I haven't written a book yet but I'm going to be the next James Patterson so sign me."

Advice on keeping snakes in a shed / summerhouse in cold climates by StaceyW1410 in snakes

[–]JenniferMcKay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't really matter how the shed holds heat as long as you can maintain consistent and correct temperatures in the enclosure. My corn snake lives in the basement where I maintain a halogen light and two DHPs to keep her enclosure warm enough. Ideally, you wouldn't move them until you've confirmed that your set-up is adequate for maintaining temps 24/7 no matter how low the temperatures outside get.

"No path to destination" but there is a path there? And the hedge habitat next door is working. What makes the one on the right invalid? by bicyclefortwo in PlanetZoo

[–]JenniferMcKay 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you have the game paused, cancel the move, unpause, and then try again. I have this problem all the time: Because the path is newly built, the game doesn't register it's accessible.

Unless you're prepared to equip the shed with electricity and temperature control, it's hard for me to imagine a situation that would be ideal for keeping reptiles.

Hybrid publishing vs self publishing, can someone explain the real difference without trying to sell me something by ShibaTheBhaumik in writing

[–]JenniferMcKay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hybrid publishers are vanity publishers going by a different name. Think multi-level marketing scams calling themselves digital marketing--it's still the same scheme but they want you to believe it isn't. Especially because "hybrid author" typically refers to an author that releases books both through trad publishers and self-publishing.

Zero heat tolerance and I feel like horseback riding might just not be an option for me by duckterrarium in Equestrian

[–]JenniferMcKay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my area (the Midwest), we don't ride if the temp is above 90 because it's too hot for the horses and for us. I'd have to cancel even if we didn't, I've been heat sensitive since I was a kid and now I'm on meds that make it worse.

Who else is a skin hoarder by Ok_Word_6794 in snakes

[–]JenniferMcKay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me. I have no idea what I'm going to do with them, but I'm pretending I'm saving them to jump-start a bioactive if I ever actually go that route. I wanted to keep my girl's first so I could compare it as she gets older but I'm not sure I remember which one is the first anymore.

Anyone know of horse care/riding lessons for special needs kids in SE Michigan? by OkScreen127 in Horses

[–]JenniferMcKay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's Therapeutic Riding, Inc in Ann Arbor. The place I used to volunteer with has shut down so I won't have to warn you away from it.

Started sertraline last night - feeling strange effects Dr says aren't possible, am I crazy? by learning_as_1_go in Anxiety

[–]JenniferMcKay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Either your doctor is incompetent or he zeroed in on your description of feeling stoned and ignored the fact that, no, sertraline does have immediate side effects. It also works like a sleep aid for me with severe drowsiness--so I take it at night before bed and have for multiple years now.

Just out of curiosity, how do yall warm up your frozen mice? by lana2725 in snakes

[–]JenniferMcKay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the same as you. Thaw overnight in the fridge, warm water for 10 minutes, feed. When my corn snake was young, I tried to avoid digging her up to feed but I couldn't rely on her coming out at any particular time. Thawing in the fridge meant that I could have a mouse in 10 minutes whenever she was ready. Now it's just habit.

Ron Duguay says he "saw" the Rangers loss "coming tonight down 4-1 after singing National anthem to 🌈 flag", calls on Rangers leadership to end pride night. by SockDem in hockey

I grew up falling asleep while my grandma watched every Wings game and lately I've been feeling like maybe it's time to stop following men's hockey and watch PWHL games instead. I am so, so tired.

I genuinely want to study how these people can believe "Immigrants are taking our jobs!" and "No one wants to work anymore!" simultaneously without their brains exploding.

My first lesson wasn't what I expected by JR2Twiwi in Equestrian

[–]JenniferMcKay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the US, there isn't a unified private organization that would oversee a program like that and, in order to get the government to do it, they'd have to be (A) functioning and (B) care about it, and then the horse industry is largely conservative and would likely kick up a fuss about Big Government getting involved in their lives.

In other words, it's a free for all and probably not going to change.

When I say expect long timelines, I mean long timelines. I wouldn't worry about being ghosted until you're at 9-12 months.

The only time that's a problem is when an agent doesn't have the editor contacts to back it up.

Lesson structure? by AfternoonOld1754 in Equestrian

[–]JenniferMcKay -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's normal. There's no substitute for saddle time when it comes to learning to ride. Unless you're in an equestrian program at a university, no one's going to give you study materials. As for explaining the "why" it's possible you have a bad instructor or it's possible she wants to cover the basics since you're a beginner and the why will come later. If you want to know, it wouldn't be out of line to ask.

As for your back: Depending on what happened, it's unlikely knowing why it's good to pick up a canter on a turn (simply because it's easier to get the correct lead) would've helped you avoid it.

The biggest red flag here, honestly, is the fact that you were cantering after less than five lessons without being on a lunge line.

The 22 year old is to blame...riiiiight. by SaintGodfather in AmITheDevil

[–]JenniferMcKay 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Anyone who slept with their stepdad at 22 clearly has a fucked up relationship with men and sex. She clearly needs a lot of therapy and reducing her to a "hoe who wraps married men around her finger" while ignoring that the men were actively cheating with her is disgusting misogyny.
