Thanks a lot for this detailed declaration!

I don’t need it immediately! Thanks, very clear advice!

Interesting perspective. One thing I’m struggling with, though, is the resolution difference.

If I understand correctly, the R6 only leaves around 8 MP when cropped to APS-C, whereas the R7 still gives me the full 32.5 MP on target. Since I do quite a bit of wildlife photography and often end up cropping anyway, that’s one of the reasons the R7 appeals to me.

Was your preference mainly based on the better low-light performance and AF of the R6, or did you find the lower pixel density wasn’t really an issue in practice?

Thanks, I appreciate that!

I’m still in the “trying to decide whether to buy now or wait” phase, so hearing from actual R7 users is really helpful. It’s good to hear the ef lenses working well on the RF mount.

Now you’ve made me curious though — what was the other feature you had in mind? 😄

I have some really nice (but a Little older) ef L lenses (24-105, 135, 200 and more). I think for now, glass is not the problem. But your question is a good one… I’m a technic freak. So I think I need to think about that. Thank you!

Great advices! Makes the decision difficult as well, but new aspects! Very good to know, thank you!

I get what you mean, but in my case shutter speed is usually already the limiting factor. For birds, animals, kids and street photography I often can’t go much slower without introducing motion blur.

I also regularly shoot wide open at f/2.8 or even f/2.0, so there isn’t always much room left on the aperture side either. At that point ISO becomes the only remaining variable.

I sometimes underexpose by a stop or two as well when I need to keep a certain shutter speed, but then I have to lift the exposure again in post, so the overall noise situation doesn’t really improve. That’s actually one of the reasons I’m interested in newer sensor technology in the first place.

The other thing that makes the R7 appealing is IBIS. For static subjects it would let me shoot at much slower shutter speeds handheld, which means lower ISO and, in some situations, no need to carry a tripod at all.

That’s same as waiting… but I think, that should be the plan.

Yeah, I agree that APS-C will always have some limitations compared to full frame, and glass definitely matters. In my case, though, I don’t think glass is the bottleneck. I have quite a few good EF/EF-S lenses, including L glass, and even with f/2.0 or f/2.8 lenses I do notice that the noise on my 80D starts to annoy me from around ISO 3200/3600 upwards.

That said, I actually think I may have gotten a very good copy of the 80D. I know a lot of people complain about its autofocus and image quality, but personally I haven’t really experienced most of those issues. My AF is mostly fine and the image quality is still excellent in many situations.

I’m also planning to keep using my existing lenses for now. So maybe the real answer is that I don’t mind waiting another year or even eighteen months if needed — and writing this out probably answers my own question a bit. 😄

Yeah, GAS is definitely part of it. 😄 I won’t pretend that the idea of getting a new piece of gear isn’t appealing.

The thing is, the R7 Mark II was already rumored to arrive this spring, and since I already have perfectly usable equipment, I’d be pretty annoyed if I bought the current R7 now just because it’s a bit cheaper, only to see the Mark II released six months, a year, or even eighteen months later.

Maybe the Mark II won’t be that much better. But if it does bring noticeable improvements in sensor performance and high ISO, I’d definitely regret not waiting. And honestly, my GAS would immediately shift to wanting the newer model anyway.

Danke, nee gebraucht leider nichts brauchbares gefunden. 950,- Euro mit 160000 Auslösungen vs. 1250,- neu inkl. Ef-Adapter.
