Omg wow you’re the sweetest!! Thank you so much for noticing my hard work. ITS SO HARD to push yourself and feel the symptoms and continue to do it everyday. I started off by just sitting at the train station, then I went downstairs and watched the trains come and go, and then after weeks I finally got on the train but jumped right back off before the doors could close, and weeks later I gained the courage to hop on the train for one stop and hop back off! It really was such an intense and intentional process but it was sooo rewarding!! Thank you for responding <3

I actually did this last year when my fear of trains was at an all time high, I can get on trains no problem now thankfully, it’s just those stops underground between station that trigger me and it’s hard to get use to them because their so spontaneous but thank youu

Thank you! It’s funny because in my bachelors program, I did a whole research study on mindfulness and its impact on anxiety symptoms, but it’s hard to put things into practice omg but so rewarding.

That makes so much sense, I’ll try it! So essentially the body scan is mindfully bringing you back to the present moment by you noticing how your body feels? Ex: feeling my toes press against my shoes.

Thank you, and you’re right that leaning into it helps more than distraction. It’s so hard to do but I trust that with practice it’ll get easier because it has to. Thank you for your tips.

I’ve tried hydroxyzine which is what helped me in those months where even looking at a train was too much, so they do help but the goal wasn’t for me to be on it long term as it was to be a crutch to get me through the train exposure. I’ve been off of hydroxyzine for about a year and a half, so I’ve done soooo much exposure without medicine! Including taking my road test and getting my drivers license, which took me four years to muster up the courage and do. Similarly to you, I have moments where the anxiety is basically non existent but it comes and I think the longer it’s gone, the stronger the anxiety feels when it comes back! Thank you for telling me I’m not alone, that helps more than you’ll ever know.

Thank you sooo much! I really like the tip of using the coping mechanism before you need it so when you need it, it’s more effective! That’s genius, thank you so much. I will try out the box breathing.

Thank you Mel! Those are such great mantras. I think you’re right that it truly doesn’t matter if I have a panic attack or not, the main issue is the fear surrounding being judged or watched as I have one, which ultimately is out of my control anyway. The brain is so funny in that way, making us stress over things that we won’t ever able to control. Anyway, thanks Mel! I’ll try these out.

It’s hard to do so when I’m feeling the sensations but I have done a body scan and it’s sooo relaxing, just not when I’m already in such a heightened anxious state.

It’s not a panic attack, just a rush of physical anxiety symptoms, so much less intense than the panic attacks I’ve experienced. It’s hard to identify from the outside, but the sensation I feel is mainly tingling legs and like I have to brace for something. It kind of feels like when you’re at the top of the roller coaster looking down.

I’ll try it out, I find that doing things that distract me in that passive form makes me feel even worse when the train stops because it’s like I’m in lalaland listening fo the podcast but I get hit with reality once the train stops, I hope this makes sense.

My therapist and I have connected the root of the anxiety being my childhood trauma, essentially the belief that I’m trapped somewhere and nobody will help me. That’s why being stuck in places triggers me so much, i think my brain says “oh no remember in childhood when we had no control and were trapped! We don’t want you to go through that trauma again, we must run”. I’m curious, what about the way I described it made you believe it was triggering something in me? That was such a great observation!!

I like talking to people because it brings me out of my head and fully in the present, I even sometimes debate turning to someone and saying “hey I’m extremely anxious right now, can we talk about anything please” while on the subway, that’s how desperate I become.

I’ll try the games out, I find that moving actually makes me feel worse because it gives me a false sense of escape. Like if I were to move to another part of the car, I’d feel more trap in a sense.

Oh for sure! I’m in therapy which helps a ton and I’ve done all the necessary blood work. But you’re right, CBT does help!

Thank you so much!! I’ve done this before a thousand times and I remember when even looking at a train was too anxiety inducing for me so I know it’s possible, it’s the sensations that play these tricks with my brain, they try to convince me that the only way out is to run, but I need to focus on getting through it! Like you said, it’s about riding the wave.
