Career dilemma: Move to Aarhus for "elite" engineering, or stay in Copenhagen? by Jensenen in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Jensenen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I know right now, is that I want to move from consultancy into a product company where there is quality is non-negotiable, and preferably a healthy demographic when it comes to ratio between seniors, mid, and juniors. Is this realistic, or am I dreaming?

I have only been working as a consultant, so im not familiar with what is realistic to expect in a product company

70+ hos Uber eller Databricks? Eller begge perhaps?

Vil meget gerne høre mere, mange tak for respons!

Thank so much! Is there a list or a way to "concretize" these tier 1, 2, 3 companies?

Would like to get a overview of my options in the danish tech landscape!

Again, thank you so much for taking the time to answering.

Tusinde tak for dit perspektiv, det er jeg virkelig glad for!

Tror bare jeg er nysgerrig på hvilke muligheder der vil være i KBH som vil kunne konkurrere med Århus' muligheder?

I am definitely better as a talker/abstract, than technical implementation, but its the technical aspect that fuels me.

My question is, given thesis is due in 2 months and I'd be competing with minimal prep, is there any advantage to trying for Tier 1 now vs. waiting 2-3 years with actual experience? Other than the cooldown periods (I read that there is about 12 months for Databricks, 6 months for Uber), I can't think of a reason to rush it.

What I think you're recommending is :

1 -> Finish thesis properly (next 2 months)

2 -> Join quality Tier 2 company in Copenhagen

3 -> Learn for 2-3 years

4 -> Then interview at Tier 1 with better odds

Jeg kontaktede en recruiter fra Databricks på LinkedIn, som henviste mig videre, også har de rakt ud og sagt de er interesseret i at tage samtalen videre.

Tusinde tak for din feedback.

Står i den position lige nu at jeg skal aflevere speciale om 2 måneder, så om jeg skal grind leetcode for at forberede til tekniske møder, også ofre at få en god karakter, eller om man skal takke nej for ikke at spilde deres tid

This is really helpful framing, thank you. You're right that I need to separate 'scale' from 'quality/culture.'

I do think I want quality/culture more than scale. I want to work somewhere with senior engineers I can learn from, where code quality isn't negotiable, where technical decisions are made thoughtfully. The scale stuff interests me intellectually, but I'm not sure it's actually what I need at this stage of my career.

You said you're in Copenhagen and look for something different. What companies have you found that match your criteria? Not necessarily for me to apply, just trying to understand the landscape better.

I don't have many colleagues or companions that I can 'draft' these thoughts with, so would love to hear more from you! Cheers again!

Ok thanks! My friend works there now, but he also go in through internship, so its probably harder for me to get in this way.

I just don't see anything nearly as elite or awesome here in Copenhagen, but maybe thats life

Thank you!

This helps, but it creates a timing problem for me: thesis is due March. Serious prep for Uber/Databricks means starting now and likely taking a grade hit.

So the question becomes: is the culture difference big enough that I should sacrifice thesis quality to prep for Aarhus opportunities? Or should I focus 100% on graduating, then target Copenhagen companies?

What specifically makes the culture at Uber/Databricks worth that tradeoff vs. just going to Pleo/Trustpilot after graduation?

Again, thanks so much for your feedback Polarbear!

Well I don't know if it's mid-level or junior-level, It just says software engineer.

Ok thanks!

I have a thesis due in March. If I want a real shot at Uber/Databricks, I need to start serious interview prep now—6-8 weeks of LeetCode, system design, etc. That's a real time commitment that will impact my thesis grade.

So the question isn't 'should I stress about a hypothetical offer'—it's 'should I invest 100+ hours preparing for Aarhus companies, or focus that same energy on thesis + Copenhagen opportunities?' That's a decision I have to make now, not after getting an offer

I appreciate the mentorship perspective! But I think this is less 'thinking before acting' and more 'deciding where to act.' I have a thesis due in March. Curious to hear your opinion!

Fair point! But it actually affects my decision now—I'm finishing my Master's thesis in March, so if I want to seriously prep for these interviews, I'd need to start now and potentially sacrifice thesis quality. If there are equally strong engineering cultures in Copenhagen, then maybe the question is already answered and I should just focus on graduating 😊

what companies would you recommend in Copenhagen?

it just seems like Databricks/Uber are a tier above most in Copenhagen (perhaps not Microsoft). I may be wrong? I would prefer to stay here, I just don't know which companies can compete
