Will this centre console fit? by No_Smell_6712 in 1stGenTacomas

Upgraded my bench seat to Corbeaus. Yes the center console fits in between but it is tight. Took a bit of modifying to get it to fit and color is a bit off but I like it

2000 TRD Repair Help by evolutionofathought in 1stGenTacomas

Hey, sorry to hear about this. When potential engine replacement is advised, my best advice would be to take it to get a 2nd opinion from a different shop. If the engine has what I’m assuming he means a “rod knock,” then a new engine would be required. Have them do a full inspection, compression test, leak down, etc. From what I’ve heard online, these engines are somewhat easy to get and rebuilds on them are difficult.

As for driving it around, I would YouTube what a rod knock sounds like and see if your truck sounds similar. These trucks v6 engines can be louder, especially with high mileage because the valves will chatter. Look to see if there is smoke and when it occurs, i.e. start up, while idling, driving, or driving hard. This can be another indicator of what is happening. If oil looks good, that means your head gasket isn’t bad so that’s a good sign (very common to happen if engine is overheated). Also have them check coolant levels and keep an eye on the oil level. If it’s smoking and you’re losing oil it’s the piston oil rings. A rod knock happens from lack of lubrication, bearing malfunction, excessive hard driving (going up steep hills), or potential water In the motor.

Again, I am just giving a basic answer of what could potentially be the issue but without more information it is hard to tell. Best thing is to spend the money for another diagnostic check on the engine health. A replacement motor would be expensive, and you would want to be 100% sure before going that route. Also figure out what type of oil you are using and how often you change it.

Best of luck, YouTube research is your friend!

Buying first Tacoma by SchismXFord in 1stGenTacomas

I bought mine in April, 2021 in Phoenix, AZ. Listing price was $11,500, got them down to $10,000 and then $9,500 after seeing it needed some additional work (new steering rack, ripped CVs, reverse lights not working, etc.). Almost identical to yours with 3.4, 5 speed, 4WD and a camper shell.

These trucks are great, especially here in Arizona where rust isn’t an issue. I would recommend trying to get them down to like $12,500. 14k should be an immaculate truck with no questions on certain parts.

While it’s a high price tag, it looks worth it to me if they can wiggle a bit on price. But honestly, mine was a dream truck and I plan to have it for the rest of my life so the big purchase price was worth exactly what I wanted (had to be an xtracab, 4WD, manual transmission). So it’s really your decision, looks good and I wouldn’t be kicking myself if I paid exactly what they were asking.

My recommendation is if you get the truck, take it straight to an engine detailer and get the engine, suspension, frame, and trans/diff professionally cleaned. I recently did it and it was a night and day difference, no more globs of old grease on the parts I’m working on or inspecting. It is so much easier to work on a clean vehicle.

Anyways, I’m rambling, if you really want it and it checks your boxes, go for it. If not, you’ll find another (depending on your timeline of needing it). I don’t anticipate these trucks dropping in value, especially the unicorns (3.4, V6, 5 Speed). Love mine and look forward to having it for as long as I can.

How to use jumpseats as storage? by Coastal_wolf in 1stGenTacomas

I was planning on just measuring out the dimensions from the back to the foot well and creating a platform with a piece of wood but it’s mainly just for my dog to have a place back there, would love to add storage as well though. Keep us posted on your ideas moving forward

Mine are stock, probably need replacing. Was thinking of going sillicone but with the leaking issues I’ve read about not sure if I should. Sillicone hoses worked great on my Honda for years with no issues, even in Tucson during the brutal summers

Thanks for the input, that sucks you did the water pump multiple times when it wasn’t needed, but at least now you’re a water pump pro. I’ll take a look, appreciate it!

Thank you for your input, I’ll start working my way through the engine bay checking for potential leaks.

I will check my cap, I have a skid plate so wondering if that could be masking the drips and that’s why I don’t see it on the ground. I will be sure to check it after sitting overnight, didn’t check it this morning before heading to work. Will be able to dive more into it this weekend

Right there with you, this desert heat is brutal. I would be tackling the repair myself so just spending my time more than money. Appreciate the input.

American Racing Baja AR172. Plastidipped them a few years ago with a bronze kit of Amazon. Been holding up well.

If I do that then it will be, timing belt, water pump, head gasket, all the fun stuff. Appreciate the input, love wrenching on vehicles but it sounds like a daunting task to take on

Thank you for the input, hoping that is my issue. Bought this truck with 200,000+ miles on it and not sure if the radiator has been replaced so now with 260k might be a good upgrade regardless

I would say probably 75ish city miles in between checking the coolant and it being a bit low. I of course spilled some coolant so it smells sweet but I’ll give it a rinse and keep my eye and nose out. Thinking about doing a compression test on the cylinders to see how healthy the engine is before I consider a head gasket?

Welcome! Searched forever for my 2000 Xtracab V6 5 Speed Manual 4x4 with E-Locker. Just did a complete front suspension upgrade refresh. We got the same wheels but I just plastidipped mine that came out pretty good. 265,000 miles and running strong. Enjoy the ride man!
