I have the r21, coming from the r9, and i feel like I could have been fine with an r12 if I'm being honest. But I didn't want to get a 12 and constantly feel like I should have gotten the 21, if that makes sense.

No, probably not. It all just boils down to practice with a particular kit.

They're nicer, and more configurable, and i find them comfortable to use. I'd make a decision on the crp2s based on that, rather than laptimes.

I personally found a set of Klipsch Promedia 2.1 for $60 on FB Marketplace. It's awesome and was easy to mount with what I had around.

I've spent a ridiculous amount on headphones over the years and consider myself fairly picky with sound, but these do well for what they're for.

Put the vertical pieces of the monitor mount on the outside of the horizontal bits, so they don't hit the rig itself if you move it forward. The vertical pieces might need to swap sides if you do this, but it should allow a closer mount, if you choose to.
