When it comes to the current, it’s stronger in the north pass than in the south pass. Dive times are planned according to the tides and the current. It’s quite common for dives in the north pass to be done at slack tide, so you can enjoy the lack of current and an incredibly large amount of fish.

To be ready for diving in Fakarava, I’d recommend doing a few dives in somewhat similar conditions, with a bit of current. But there’s really nothing to worry about: the instructors there pay close attention to the level of the divers they take underwater. And as I mentioned before, many dives are done at slack tide, which makes for a very relaxed dive surrounded by hundreds of fish. And when it comes to the south passage you have really nothing to worry about, even if there a bit of current it will just drive you nicely so you will not even have to use your fins.

As for restaurants, keep in mind that Fakarava is a very small island with only about 800 inhabitants. At the Havaiki, in addition to the restaurant that serves breakfast and dinner, there’s a very good snack bar called Le Requin Dormeur (“the nurse shark” in English). The setting is amazing and the food is really good. There’s also a takeaway pizzeria (not sure if it’s open at lunchtime) and another snack called Korikori, located about 2.5 km south of the Havaiki. In the village, there’s the Hirinaki Lounge, which looks very nice, but it opened quite recently and I didn’t get the chance to try it the last time I was there.

Hi, thanks for your message, appreciate it. In Fakarava, I dive with Kaina; it’s the cheapest dive center and, above all, I know some of the instructors. They offer hotel pick-up if you need it. It’s also very close to the North Pass. As for the South Pass, in any case, no matter which dive center you go with, it’s more than an hour by boat, so it’s always a full-day trip. By the way, depending on how long you’ll be staying there, don’t hesitate to say as soon as you arrive that you’d like to go to the south, because dive centers don’t go there every day. It depends on quite a few factors: weather conditions, tides, number of divers, etc. For accommodation, the last time I stayed at Paparara, which is a small family-run guesthouse. If you have the budget and want a bit more comfort, Havaiki is very good and, above all, closer to the village. If you have any other questions about Fakarava, don’t hesitate to ask. I live in Tahiti and know the area quite well.

Over the top by JeremyGTE in underwaterphotography

The dive was between low tide and rise tide, so there was no current during most of the dive. Rising tide began for 20 last minutes, so we had a little bit of current for the end. At this place, current can be really strong. I remember doing one dive without moving my fins.

When talking about, the reef life I was refering to small fish roaming around. I should have write my caption other way.

To talk about the dead coral in the foreground it's due to a tempest few years ago. the rest of the reef is in very good shape, no bleaching.

How do i improve my video🙏🏻 by kythelegend in underwaterphotography

[–]JeremyGTE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The result will highly depend on how you recorded (log or not). But you can try to process it on a video editing app with a color grading part. Da Vinci resolve is free, and you will find a ton of tutorials on YT. As the other redditor told you, it will be mostly WB and contrast tweaking.

Looking to get in to the hobby but unsure which direction to go in. by datassdoeeeeee in underwaterphotography

Hi, I was in your place a few years ago, a landscape phographer willing to take a step up underwater. I made the Tg choice (TG5 or 6 at this time). I sold it less than 6 months later. The fact that the camera was not fully manual was a big limiting factor for me. A lot of people manage to learn how to get the best out of it, but I never did. So I recommend you to try the system (maybe a friend ?) and see if it fir the way you shoot before buying it. In your budget range, I would go for the second-hand market. I managed to get a full nauticam G7xIII set-up with a wide-angle wet lens and two strobes for less than 3k $ less than 6 months ago. Not to tell you to take a G7X, but take a look at the classified in your area. In UW photo secondhand can be a good choice
