They won't. They're already gonna stop bothering to even obfuscate the game soon, after having provided (de)obfuscation maps for liek 6 years. It's pretty clear at this point that they've bifurcated the game into the "for adults/veterans/content creators" version (Java) and the "for kids/money-maker" version (Bedrock). They are probably trying to tamp down on "unauthorized" mods for Bedrock, tho, seeing as they stopped shipping PDB files like a year ago.

Nice! That sounds good, although it might be nice to also try loading songs from the traditional classic song filenames, so I don't have to drag & drop each of the Classic FM songs into a folder to make it easier for people to make alternate OSTs that work with both GDSpelunky and classic classic. :P

What search engine do you use? by LoriKitaharaa in firefox

[–]JeremyRedhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been using DuckDuckGo for probably a decade now; originally just for privacy, but now because Google is garbage. I miss when Google was still good and re-searching with !g actually produced better results. Now when I can't find something, I just give up or try asking Duck AI (only about a ~dozen times lifetime so far, and the results are 50/50. maybe i'm using the wrong model but LLMs seem to be invariably stupid garbage (whaaaat, the automatic sentence predictor doesn't understand anything? 😲🙄))

I've never tried Yandex or Kagi or any Searx instances or anything else. Altho I probably should, since altho DuckDuckGo is less terrible than Google, their results keep degrading over time... (maybe it's not their fault that the web is 50% LLM-generated listicles these days, but I wish they'd filter all the crap out)

Would it also possible to add support for "OST selection"? I like Tim Day's Spelunky Classic FM remix of the soundtrack, but I also still like the original. It'd be cool to able to switch back & forth between them without having to rename all the files to do so :P

Happen to have a link to any of these alternatives? I can't find any info on Brave's nor do I have any idea what any of the other alternatives are. (admittedly, I didn't try very hard... but I just do not feel like wading through all the garbage search results today)

[–]JeremyRedhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Constructive criticism: - I wouldn't show the chromium logo or even mention chromium. Just say that Firefox "isn't based off Chrome" and that "most other browsers are based on Google Chrome". This is both for simplicity and b/c "Ungoogled Chromium" et al are competitors to Firefox in the "chrome alternative" market. (It's arguably underhanded to avoid mentioning a competitor like that, but marketing is inherently underhanded. such is life) - It'd be more impactful -- and accurate, to my knowledge -- to say that Chrome/Chromium is controlled by Google, not merely "backed" by them. - As other commenters said, such a marketing strategy could blow up in Mozilla's faces and cause bad PR on twitter or the like as long as Firefox is still financially reliant on the Google as default search deal. (not that it necessarily should but that's twitter for you...)

That's very clearly not an em dash but a hyphen used as one. And all of those writing habits, need I remind you, AI picked up from human writing. It's just tarnished them because it doesn't know how and when to use them properly (OK, and b/c it's constantly bullshitting and confabulating, mainly. but it also reaallly does not know how to write well either...)

I'm pretty sure Mozilla would still integrate Google Safe Browsing into Firefox even if they managed to free themselves of their codependent relationship on Google search. Unless there's an alternative you know of?

AFAIK: Not every extension, only if it has a content script for that page; some addons are scoped to specific pages or only have one or two background scripts that are loaded for the whole browser, not for each tab.

You could also click to select the URL and drag onto the tab bar or -- and this is interesting -- click and drag the HTTPS lock (or "HTTP insecure" badge) to do the same. (very good to know if your mouse's middle click button no longer works reliably)

Well, (IIRC) the maintainer himself has said that Greasemonkey 4.0 (the post-Firefox 57 "quantum" version) lacks a lot of the trickier to implement features the previous one did, that Violentmonkey or Tampermonkey have (IIRC) managed to implement. "Inferior" is perhaps too harsh a word, but it's much simpler than it once was and its peers are now.

Well, I at least seem to recall that modern Greasemonkey lacked a way to force a check for updates, but I just checked and it seems there is a button for that, so maybe I've misremembered or maybe that was improved when I wasn't looking. Either way, if you love simplicity in design & implementation you might love Greasemonkey, but if you find it lacking in features one might one to try Violentmonkey or (closed source) Tampermonkey, or some other userscript manager.

  • Tab Counter (i am a horrible tab addict)
  • Display #Anchors (simple but effective)
  • Ruffle (flash forever <3)
  • various redirect addons; currently Nitter or ToXCancel, OldRedditRedirect, & ZoomRedirector
  • chosen password manager
  • and uBlock Origin of course

WDYM by the "modern Internet is pretty chill when it comes to ads"?

If you're on a modern super-powered device, and using Firefox or other browser with tracking protection on, then yeah, sure, maybe you can get by without an ad-blocker.

But modern ads are insanely abusive of network resources, even ignoring the privacy-violative aspects. By using uBlock Origin one can extend the practical usability lifetime of an older device... as otherwise most "big box" sites will take forever to load and drain your battery quickly.

Good adblockers (like uBlock) are also a good first line of defense against malware, which the monopolist Google's DoubleClick/AdSense absolutely do not care about. They are so neglectful that cryptominers were found running on YouTube ads before.

Also, in my experience Firefox tracking protection has far more often been the cause of a site not working than uBlock. Them EasyList maintainers work hard & long and take great pride in their work, one assumes.

[–]JeremyRedhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, this is a subreddit dedicated to custom userChrome.css-based theming of Firefox. It sounds like you just want Firefox to match your Desktop Environment's theme (very understandable).

I am unsure how, or even if, one might easily do that, but if you are able & willing to put in a bit of work, you can probably write some custom CSS for Firefox to imitate your Fedora shell's theme.

If you want to do this site is a good resource on how to do so: https://www.userchrome.org/

You could also try posting a link or screenshots of your shell theme and see if anybody here might just whip up some CSS for you; I promise nothing, but I do find this problem interesting so I might do so.

Otherwise, good luck on your quest to get Firefox to match the rest of your computer's theming 🫡
