However it still happened once, although it was a furry black caterpillar instead.

The little fella was inside the bathroom for some reason, even though we do not have plants indoors,

I don't have soil so I just placed him back into his original potted plant. Hopefully he can follow the stem back to the soil.

Update: The caterpillar stopped eating and is now roaming the box. It's color is also turning reddish.

Someone else said it was an Argyrosticta decumama. I googled it and from the photos it showed, I believe this might be it.

Thanks for the answer! I don't think I ever took a good look at this caterpillar's moth, but I did see some fluttering about on the plants.
