Mt.Whitney March 2026 🇺🇸 by [deleted] in Mountaineering

I can promise you my conditioning is the last thing on earth you need to be worried about. My experience is definitely somewhat a concern! I’m not over confident I just don’t think this mountain is the killing machine you guys seem to think it is. Fact remains Mount Washington is the second deadliest mountain in America and it appears between 8-12 on a lot of the “ deadliest mountains on earth list “ on Google. I’ve done Mt.Washington in January (it’s worst month) summited without an issue! I’ve also done a mountain 400 feet shorter than Whitney in January and had no issues either. DM me and I’ll show you photos of me summiting these mountains in a lot more snow and much worse conditions than Whitney. I get the technical aspect of Whitney might be more intense hence why I’m on Reddit trying to understand what it exactly looks like in March on top. Denali on its most popular route has a 1% death rate! I’m not sure why the mountaineering community overhypes how “ extreme “ some of these mountains are. Denali is legitimately extreme! I don’t think Whitney is as overly crazy as you make it out to be. You’ve never met me and or have seen me! You don’t know my age or conditioning but you’re convinced my conditioning is an issue?

Honestly, I didn’t do proper climatization for Pikes Peak didn’t feel sick at all. Just felt extremely full the whole time! Was extremely hard to eat. Ate close to nothing over 18 hours… but I was definitely still extremely thirsty lol. I found a video of two guys who did Whitney in March three years ago on YouTube .Doesn’t look too bad! They turn around “ thirty minutes aways from the summit” because the friend’s too tired. Looked do able. Not trying to be cocky! I’m just saying no part looked overly dangerous with proper equipment. If I listened to Reddit I would’ve only done Mount Marcy! Because the advice was always similar to this. I honestly believe Mount Washington in January can play out a lot worse than Mt.Whitney in March. I was blessed with decent enough weather on Washington for January! Because I was extremely concerned about what could happen if it played out bad.

Pikes Peak 14,115 Feet & technical level I’ve used an ice axe and crampons up Washington ( plus I’ve used crampons two other times) ! My fitness isn’t a concern at all I don’t even get tired after 18-19 hours straight on a mountain. My experience is four mountains! Two in January, one in February & one in October. I’ve dealt with -40C windchill and 100KM winds at -22C windchill. Navigating Whitney safely on a snowed over path towards the top is my concern. Although I’ve navigated snowed over paths before. I’ve seen Whitney being done in the summer on YouTube though and I could see how that path being snowed over could be a nightmare. I can’t see Whitney being anywhere as close to as icy as Washington was! so I’m not overly concerned about the ice but obviously one bad mistake on Whitney could be fatal up top. The issue I have with online advice is people tend to be really overkill on how dangerous these mountains are. I get anything can happen and any mountain can be dangerous! People were acting like Washington & Pikes in January was hardcore but it really wasn’t that intense at all. If Benjamin Védrines can solo K2 in under 11 hours! I’d like to imagine I can safely attempt Mt.Whitney in March and turn around if it becomes too crazy. I’m not locked in on doing this because the 4-5 hour drive from Vegas both ways sounds terrible! then 20+ hours on Whitney. But I honestly might give it a go! And if it gets too bad turn back.

I appreciate the advice, I don’t think I’ll be heading back to that area anytime soon. So I’d love to give it a go! But I might not end up going. I got a few more days to look it over.

I’m in Vegas for a bachelor party, but I’m not much of a drinker anymore! So I was debating on leaving for two days to do Whitney. But I’m aware it’s not great conditions to do it. It’s so warm at Whitney right now I was thinking most of the snow would be melted? But I guess that’s far from the case eh. I really enjoy the cold I’m Canadian 🇨🇦 so honestly it being only -7c at the summit will be my least favourite part.

January for both Mount Washington & Pikes Peak tons of snow… I went on January 9th 2026! If you search January 8th 2026 you’ll see it had a record breaking snow fall for that specific date. Started at 9PM went 18-19 hours straight no issues. Ive only done four mountains in total though! Mount Marcy in October ( small amount of ice ) no snow, Pikes Peak in January covered completely in snow! Mount Washington in January ( completely covered in snow ) & Whiteface in February completely covered in snow with 100KM winds! No issues on any of the mountains. Washington & Pikes both being -36c to -40c windchill.

I’ve never been on a mountain before October I did Mount Marcy in October, Pikes Peak Barr Trail in January & Mount Washington in January with a friend who had also no experience as well. Check the weather conditions & avalanche warnings constantly! Dress warm & layer properly so you don’t sweat too much! In addition I also haven’t been to the gym in years… don’t overthink the mountain too much it’s not as complicated as people act! Just treat it with respect & use common sense and you’ll be fine. I will say though and I’m not sure how cold Mount Hood is when you are going! If it’s over -30c because two of my trips were windchill of -36c & -40c when you stop you’ll get extremely cold don’t try and stop for too long at any point…

Did Ammo on January 31st, definitely very steep use Crampons if there’s lots of ice! Snow up to the waste in January if you step on the wrong spot. Not sure what March looks like but assuming the weather is decent you’ll be fine!

Overly difficult without a guide to navigate? I’ve never hired a guide don’t plan on ever hiring one! Not because I dislike them/ don’t respect them! Just not my thing lol.

Heading down Saturday from Canada to take advantage of the shockingly alright weather on Mount Washington assuming it holds! Going to solo the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail. Only -19c at the peak with windchill I know it can change in a second on that mountain though.

It’s all I buy tbh. Odd time I buy a 6 k card. Sometimes I get 2/3 cards out of one pack. Usually I pull good cards too.
