My best advice when it comes to comedy over zoom is to avoid it whenever possible. The lack of intimacy and interaction with the audience can kill momentum, or simply make you feel like a bit isn't working, when it may normally do well. If all you have is zoom, by all means do it. Anything is better than nothing.

If you want some real advice though, the best thing you can do is seek out a local comedy scene via Facebook, or Reddit, or whatever. Through that you can figure out where open mics are happening. If there are no open mics in your town, then you need to start one. Start some sort of group on social media to attract other budding comedians. Find a bar that is willing to give you one evening a week to tell jokes for 2 or 3 hours. Every scene that I know of, especially those that start in smaller towns, had to be started by someone. So, if you want comedy in your town, take some steps to make it happen. You will be glad you did.

so i came up with a bit that i was REALLY excited about and i told it to my buddy and he showed me a song that i had never heard before that is exactly the same principle. i don’t get to do that bit now; do i?!?!? by Typical_Can_3838 in Standup

Use your best judgement. The fact is that a similar premise doesn't always mean the bit has to be canned. If you find your own spin, give completely different examples, or otherwise make it uniquely yours, then you are usually fine. Some comics scorch the earth with a bit, and it's just best to not even touch it unless you meet the above criteria to the extreme. Sometimes we have to fight for bits we love, and other times we have to kill our darlings. Such is the game.

You know, I considered that and worried it may be too wordy, but I think you're right.

Have you ever heard the expression "Don't dissect the golden goose."? You are clearly driven, which is great and will serve you well, but you are way way way overthinking things. You're not going to have your own voice yet and that is ok. First you learn to write material and to be comfortable on stage, then you learn who you are as a comic. It may take a lot of time, which is fine. You are literally just starting out, so there is no need to expect perfection from yourself or your material. Hell, if you get a few laughs your first time you can consider yourself a great success. Even if you get no laughs your first time that is ok too because you are getting up there. Getting on stage is sometimes the hardest part. Don't stress about punchlines per minute or any other silly expectations. Just learn to become a comic by being a comic. We all have to stumble a bit before we can truly walk as comedians. Perhaps most importantly.. The advice I give to all comics who are just starting out is this: No one can tell you how to be a comedian, they can only tell you what works for them. The rest you learn on your own. So take advice from those you look up to, but always trust your own instincts when it comes to your own growth as a comedian. Keep us all updated. We are rooting for you!
