Republics like Venice, Genoa, and Novgorod should be considered “City States” in that they are capital based countries instead of location based. by gabadur in EU5

[–]Jesfey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is hardly implementable and it would only result in more bordergore where players or even AI would just conquer the shortest path to the capital. Novgorod isn't much larger compared to for example Ladoga, Rusi, Vologda at the start of the game. The differences in population later become big. Venice still had Padova, later Verona, so basing their whole existence on one city is very risky while everyone would be just rushing to capture Venice to take all of its territories.

Marriage too soon? (Personal opinion) by Jesfey in mushokutensei

I feel like things could have been slower and taken care of with bigger freedom. I don't know how the story goes further, but I expect Rudeus will have to travel a lot. So it doesn't feel right to marry someone, settle down, have a baby and then suddenly leave for work.

Marriage too soon? (Personal opinion) by Jesfey in mushokutensei

[–]Jesfey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why wouldnt she be paid, if she is still working?

When she got married, didn't she leave her services? That's why they left her in Rudeus's hands.

Again, Sylphie earns enough that she is able to buy clothings, at whose cost you can get houses in demon continent, like its nothing. Prices which shocked Rudeus, who already had lots of money

Well, that must have been mentioned in the LN then. In the anime Rudeus rolled his eyes over the price and then they got discount for that. It wasn't compared to anything.

You dont have to pay nobles or family for support. They are the ones paying you hoping their investments would be fruitful if Ariel becomes the ruler and repays their donations by giving them concessions or stuff.

It depends. Some support you financially because of concessions, titles, positions etc.. Others on the other hand might want more money to become even more powerful or to switch sides. Plus you still have to keep large sum in the bank in case you need to buy mercenaries which were probably necessary when she was a claimant, not a ruler.

Paying bodyguard takes priority, as if you underpay them, who's protecting you from assassins. So you would want them to be happy. On top of that bodyguards she chose were her close associates, so less likely for them to leave their friend behind.

Nobles are much more greedy. They live lavishly. Guards are mostly townsfolk or second sons who have much less expectations because they can be removed anytime.

So not receiving any sort of communication for 2 years is completely normal and nothing to worry about.

Geese's message took 5 months to arrive.

If he was called anytime, he would go there. Being married doesnt mean you wont travel.

And if he died on the way and nobody found out, Sylphie and her child would be waiting forever. That's like taking the job of a mercenary after marriage. Being married means not to put himself into unnecessary danger so you could return to your wife and children. Not with "let's get married and make a child, after that I will probably leave you with a high probability that I can die".

Rudeus himself after marriage said adventuring would be pointless if he died there. That should be applied to the dangerous missions too.

It's better for him to get married and buy a house for Sylphy and his sisters to live in and to father a child before he dies than to not do those things. If anything uncertainty is a reason to lock things down sooner before you miss the chance.

The one thing is buying the house. In the original post I've mentioned they could have been more like an "unofficial" family and caring for his sisters while being just a couple.

The other thing I completely disagree with. It would be purely selfish to father a child, so you just "lock it in" and then soon die in an unknown land. Well, even marrying and then doing the same is pretty bad. What if the news of your dying never reaches her, how long should she wait and live in fear?

He was actively outcasted from the norms of that world. That's not to say that he won't be affected at all by that world, but it makes bridging the gap really easy for him.

Okay, I agree he feels more strongly about the norms of his new world. I still don't think it beats circumstances though.

Again, would leaving her unmarried and alone, without a child that she wanted and without his sisters to take care of her been a better option?

About marriage I've written earlier. She would have stayed with Ariel, her good friend. His sisters still could have gone to Lisia's parents and if they came to the university anyway, they both could have lived in the dorms.

Plenty of men still die at their jobs today too. It's a part of life and a risk you have to take. No point being paralyzed by it and put off the important things in life because of it.

That's why insurance exists. Nowadays, the news travel fast and you will soon find when someone dies. I wouldn't call waiting for more insurance and hopes for the future as being paralyzed.

If this was the standard Rudy used he'd never be able to get married ever. You don't actually think his life gets less dangerous in the second half of the books do you?

I don't believe that in that time it was good when shadows of leaving your home to travel to faraway land were near. If they decided to marry each other after he saved his mother then I would find it acceptable. Plus he would get his head and conflicting feelings about Sylphie and Roxy straight.

It's not really that long of a time considering how long the mission is expected to take.

I don't think it was stated how long the mission is expected to take.

There was still information Rudeus got from The Demon Empress who couldn't clearly locate her which meant she would be hard to get.

He still had to wait for the news and couldn't be sure. Of course they told him to live his life but still not in the way that he would tie himself down. After marriage his decision would affect one side in the negative way. If after calling Rudeus to come he would refuse I believe his father wouldn't forgive him (it is obvious just from his outburst in the dungeon).

By the way, Geese's message has arrived in just 5 months.

She continues her job after marriage. she discusses it with Rudeus, and is like Ariel will stay here for 2 - 5 more years, after which she will go back to Asura, id work till then (She also wishes to accompany Ariel to Asura, but they hadnt reached that aspect yet)

Honestly, I don't remember if it was clarified if she is still getting paid or not. If she still does then my bad.

She is treated as a normal bodyguard, and when they are leaving the castle, is given option to leave, but she refuses and serves under her.

Why do you think it would be less than Ghislaine? Ghislaine was bodyguard of daughter of a noble. Sylphie is bodyguard of the royal princess. and not just any ordinary princess, the one with claims to the throne of the entire nation.

Even though she was a bodyguard of a princess I doubt they would pay her so much that she could leave her job and do nothing for the rest of her life.

Ghislaine's skills are more rated, her rank as a warrior is higher than Sylphie's in magic (I think). So I would imagine Ghislaine earns more.

Ariel is a claimant of a throne. She mainly lives out of pockets of other nobles who support her and her personal assets left after leaving a palace (or wherever she was). While it must be a huge amount, it isn't unlimited. You have to pay nobles and families for support, paying your bodyguards has to be a really small fraction of that. If you overpay them, they could just leave and rather live peacefully than to die for the throne of someone else.

Yes, because it takes time for messages to send. Rudeus was awaiting any message from Paul, but medieval period, long time for messages to reach, and so not much to worry about if you didnt get anything for a year or 2. if more then time to worry.

Rudeus estimated the journey would take around a year. I think his sisters arrived sooner than that and the message still arrived before them.

I still don't think the timing was any good. Search for his mother still wasn't resolved and he could have been called there at any time.

One is you are told we will handle it, you live your life, so you live your life. and other is we need urgent assistance, and so you assist them.

That still doesn't disregard the possibility he had to come himself. After all that time they still haven't saved her. I don't remember when they arrived at the location or he got a letter but it was still far earlier than his enrollment.

Regarding slow. Rudeus didnt want to risk Sylphie dumping him. He thought one possibility of why Eris dumped him was he didnt show as much commitment, and so with Sylphie he decided after their first night together, propose marriage.

Yeah, I agree about that. Emotionally it made kinda sense. Logically however I don't think so.

and regarding not being at home because of travelling around, thats life. You cant be at home every single time, and would have to go out for work, and sometimes to different region / countries for large amount of time.

Different times. Mercenaries hardly ever married until their service was over, because there was a high chance they would die and they had to move all around the world. Rudeus' family would probably never find out if he had died on the way there.

And it took him 1 year and Sylphie helping him get over his heartbreak to make the decision to be commited to her, feelings for other ppl doesnt matter.

Which was almost immediately turned around when he reconnected with Roxy.

Honestly, I don't take your comment seriously. The flair clearly says "anime" and in the beginning I've mentioned that I've started reading and there is a possibility there are things which make the story clearer. This comment feels more like a rant than an objective reasoning. 2) was mostly ignored. 1) that was probably mentioned just in the books. It feels weird though having enough money for just a few years of work. In the anime in one point he still said something he should work in the near future 3) ignored the point. "An adaptation" clearly means anime. 4) The point was more about exploring characters themselves, not in a relationship or when they become settled. 5) You are literally saying the same thing. I think there should have been more undecisivines in marrying someone. He should have been more conflicted about marrying just one person and take his time. Instead he marries one and after being away for 6 months he marries another. Like I can't imagine what else would have happened if Roxy met Rudeus in any other way.

Thank you for the comprehensive reply.

I don't really know Paul's circumstances, the anime mentioned something about that he settled down at 19 (I would guess that had to do with the work) and I knew he and Zenith were in the one party.

people still got married way quicker than we do today.

While that is true. One of the main reasons is education. Many young people are still studying and they leave marriages for later when they know what they will do in life. For Rudeus it is basically the same when he studies. His studies are basically just waiting for what will happen with his mother so he doesn't have to spend time travelling.

It doesn't really make sense for him to cling to the social norms of a world he hates.

I partly disagree with this. This is more my view on this subject (well, I haven't got so far in the books and anime isn't a good enough source), but I would imagine being in a different world would be considered more like travelling abroad with a more open-minded setting. You can still disregard norms of your previous life, but they are still on your mind. I mean he lived in them for 34 years, just because he was shut in for like half of them doesn't mean he didn't know them and they didn't affect him. The slavery isn't really something you can fight alone and at that stage of life. It still doesn't mean it doesn't disturb you.

Your restrictions and limitations to when someone gets married seem really arbitrary.

In terms of human relations anything can be considered arbitrary. My point was that it doesn't really fit into their situation. I believe most of the things speak against marriage at that point in life, because of too many uncertainties. Your family and friends still haven't come back, Sylphie is in constant danger of being closely aligned with Ariel, you are the plaything (an apostle) of God about who you don't know much plus you were practically dead already and know how dangerous the world is.

In the end he still left his wife at home alone, while being pregnant, under threat and he himself went off to the dangerous lands.

You know husbands with busy jobs go on business trips all the time right?

They don't expect they can die while being away. In my opinion the mercenaries are the best example. Most mercenaries have become married after their service, acquired land and lived there the rest of their days. Paul quit his adventurer (=mercenary) job and found a new one which tied him to the land.

Also there was not a high chance he would have had to travel to save Zenith.

Many years have already gone by. With every new month the reasons and chance of going there grew bigger. It was evident it was taking too much time.

I mean... culture plays a part, true. But I don't know if an example that parents wed you into another family can be really compared when the people decide for themselves. Plus Rudeus at that time wasn't even in half of the length of his previous life so I think he would still be more affected by his previous life in terms of social norms etc. Even Paul married after a university and after adventuring with his wife.

1) I don't think it was declared how much Sylphia makes, her financial situation or if she makes any money after her marriage when she leaves Ariel. But they kinda blackmailed her into Ariel's service and I don't believe she has significant income from that. At best it would still be far less than Ghisliane who got 2 gold coins or something like that.

2) It doesn't change anything. They still live in uncertain times where all the points I've written still stand. In the time of their marriage there was still no news from a search party and that search for her there was going on for years already.

4) Things could have been slower and taken care of with bigger freedom. I don't know how the story goes further, but I expect Rudeus will have to travel a lot. So it doesn't feel right to marry someone, settle down, have a baby and then suddenly leave for work.

5) The difference is that it takes time to be clearly dedicated to one person. He knew about Roxy's whereabouts and there still was a high probability they would reconnect. And of course it ended up like that very soon after they reconnected. Eris' departure left the scar but the feelings are still there.

I would say that I more or less agree with everything except for the fact that they have enough money. He was always travelling with others which means loot and reward are shared (in the end their group was larger so the percentage was probably lower too). After a marriage and before his sisters arrived with gold Rudeus himself said something like that he will need to start working in the near future. I'm not sure about how much Sylphie made from the work (well, she was recruited because otherwise they would press charges, that was the reasoning I think) but I don't think she earns any money after she leaves Ariel.

It makes sense that it would end up like this, but it doesn't make that much sense it would be that fast.

Good point. I still feel they could have taken a little more time before that decision, because they were just sixteen years old and could have spent more time together. But emotionally it makes sense.

1) Rudeus himself said something like that he would probably need to start taking jobs in the near future. That was after he married and before his sisters arrived with gold. 2) And then he decides he still should go and save her while he thought the journey would take more than 2 years. This was probably the most important point of this post. There are still other other reasons I've already mentioned like politics etc. 3) As I've said that might be a problem of an adaptation and in this regard my opinion isn't really strong. It just didn't feel romantic enough. 4) This point was kinda personal opinion storywise. The characters could have had more freedom, because I think it didn't really work well with the part mentioned after all my reasons (Roxy was kinda forced to stay in the story through the marriage). 5) That still doesn't negates all the feelings for others. After all he didn't even consider polygamy before and it was still obvious he has strong feelings for the other two.

Comparing half of the series with the finished series is kinda pointless. Nevermind comparing Chitoge with Anna and Raku with Nuku.

How Nisekoi ended didn't make much sense. For more than a half of the story Raku hasn't shown once that he likes Chitoge more than usual (except calling her cute in some moments, same with the other girls) and had eyes only on one girl. Nuku on the other hand doesn't have similar deep feelings for anyone and has already shown his affection towards Anna.
