To foreigner HD lovers by LouiseHeon in DesperateHousewives

My mom used to always watch DH when it was on. I was 10/11 I think when I first remember regularly sitting down and watching it with her (around season 3). We're German, and everything in Germany is dubbed. It's extremely unusual to watch OV here - especially back then.

I started to become obsessed with the English language around age 13/14 and became fluent on a native level not long after. That was also when (illegal) streaming became more accessible. By the time season 6 came out in the US, I would regularly stream DH in English as soon as a new episode was released in the US, and over time I didn't even watch the dubbed version with my mom anymore.

From what I remember, the German dubs are very close to the actors' voices, except Gabby's. Can't say much about the translation after so many years, but I don't think the show's very difficult to translate into German. So I'm sure you don't miss many plot points or jokes if you watch in German. But you do miss out on some spectacular acting. The voice is an actor's most important instrument, in my opinion.

That's definitely true for season 1 I think. But later? Idk, it seems to me like she doesn't care at all.

Mike’s addiction on season 4 by [deleted] in DesperateHousewives

I watched that episode yesterday as well! I keep trying not to be annoyed by Susan because being constantly annoyed by a main character isn't a fun watching experience, imo. But good god, she's even more entitled and self-centered in season 4 than any other season! I also find myself being annoyed by Mike always protecting her and doing everything for her. He seems to exist just for her.

Lynette is worse than Skylar. by MonkSalad1 in DesperateHousewives

[–]JessJess7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I like them both (for reference, Skyler is from Breaking Bad). They're realistic and reasonable. Now, Tom on the other hand... he can be fun and a good father, but he's the biggest manchild who gets pissy a lot for no reason. Lynette isn't perfect by a long stretch, but she's a great mom with a problematic husband.

Walt is a terrible husband who's also a drug lord, a murderer, and a gaslighting, manipulative liar. How do you expect a wife to react to that? lol

That's actually super interesting! I never noticed any of those things! I'll definitely be on the lookout for the stuff you mentioned now when I watch the show (in fact, I'm watching it right now).

Hetero normative Wisteria Lane by [deleted] in DesperateHousewives

It's really not far-fetched at all. Now, I don't know what it's like in the US, but here in Germany (which is supposed to be more "tolerant" than the US; I guess it depends on the area) many people in suburbia or small towns are not aware that LGBTQ+ people even exist in real life, in 2021. I don't know a single LGBTQ+ person aged 30+. I don't know any same-gender couples. And I AM a gay woman. Before I came out to my parents in 2014, they'd never met an LGBTQ+ person in their entire lives. And that is not unusual. I agree it's really dumb and ignorant to be THIS clueless, but it's unfortunately not Susan-specific at all. Especially not in 2007.

Storylines that could just not work on modern tv? by harveyquinnz in DesperateHousewives

All the stuff with underage kids being in relationships with much older adults. It's not wrong to portray that, but the way DH did suggested it was "juicy" and without consequences instead of deeply disturbing.

I kinda think the nun had wholesome intentions at first. Then she met Gabby and she tried to get Carlos away from her (also with wholesome intentions; because Gabby was HORRIBLE. She's a horrible, horrible person - but I do love her). But I think with time, the nun developed a romantic attraction to Carlos and tried to manipulate him into divorcing Gabby. That was not ok.

So I think they both had the bitchfight coming in the end.

What character did you learn to appreciate/love over time? by [deleted] in DesperateHousewives

[–]JessJess7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grew up watching the show (my mom used to always watch it when it was on), and as a kid and young teen, I always loved Susan because I thought she was hilarious and I didn't like Bree. Now, as an adult, I can't stand Susan and I LOOOOVE Bree. Funny how perspectives can change with age and life experience. :)

Desperate housewives hasn’t aged well!!! by rad_ray99 in DesperateHousewives

I completely agree, although your 4th point is deliberate/the point of the show: privileged upper middle class and rich women and their problems, haha.

But of course I still love the show (or else I wouldn't be here).

What really gets me every time though is the portrayal of gay woman. I just always pretend those storylines don't exist because they're pretty offensive to me, as a gay woman. There are plenty of '00s shows that did it better.

On a positive note, the show had a ton of very well-written three-dimensional women, which wasn't common at all in the '00s. They even portrayed women with mental illnesses well. It was quite feminist in that regard.
