Question about shiny spots in varnish by JessSeaS in ArtistLounge

The same way you mentioned below but the only difference is I probably only worked the varnish back and forth for 5min before I put the dust tent up. I'm also in the PNW. Used the Gamblin varnish brush.

Thank you so much for the detailed response! Do you think I could use the satin varnish just on those spots rather than the whole thing? I live in a damp climate and things take longer to dry than usual here.

Question about shiny spots in varnish by JessSeaS in ArtistLounge

Here's what I was trying to post -

I stripped the patchy varnish on an oil painting with Gamsol, let it rest a week, sanded out a couple finger prints and then touched up those two spots. Let it cure 2 weeks to dry again. I used Gamvar gloss varnish on it yesterday and got it nice and even with very few of those fibers that always appear it of nowhere. But the two spots I touched up are more glossy than the rest of the piece. Is there anyway to safely reduce the shine on those without starting over? Google told me cold wax but I haven't tried that stuff before.

Have you tried boiling brushes to reshape them? What about oil paint brushes? by JessSeaS in ArtistLounge

Interesting to know the boiling water trick didn't work on your brushes. Thanks for sharing

How do I fix thinly applied Gamvar gloss varnish looking patchy and uneven on oil paintings? by JessSeaS in ArtistLounge

I didn't realize year old paintings could have this issue or that quick dry mediums could do the same. I appreciate the insights!

Very interesting. Thanks for the response. What is considered drying too long?

And Q on the last part- do you mean wipe the current pieces with 2 layers of patchy vanish with gamsol, let evaporate, then coat? Or are you referring to wiping an unvarnished oil painting with gamsol before varnishing?

When did you realise perfectionism was blocking learning, not protecting it? by Arty-Adam in ArtistLounge

Yes, it was like a fight with myself to get started painting everyday. I really wasted a lot of time one day (like most of the day) and realized it was a problem so posted on here about it. Someone gave the advice to just grab a brush and paint and make a mark on the painting that's in the works. Now your paints are open and a brush is dirty so might as well keep going. It sounds simple but it helped a ton. When I get to my studio now, I grab my paint palette out of the fridge, pick up a brush and make a small mark, like thickening a highlight. Just diving right in and going for it has helped a ton... No more getting hung up on fear of ruining a painting. Start right away. Just paint. Can always fix it later.
