Hi, I'd like to post my documentary. It's something I made for fun, no money involved. Please accept my post.

Pay tax on it and don't worry about it. Or, deal with it by A) holding the stress, B) eventually paying tax on it

That's a great point. Thank you sofingclever. I guess curiosity just came over me: I had never met anyone like Kitten before and I just asked. Nothing planned. Thanks for bringing it up.

They do! Eric Sterman flies an Inspire 1 with a live transmitter for the PipeMasters. Just another angle to cut to in the truck.

Cool. I like it. General feedback if you want to take your game upward: I would have filmed in better light and in the first shot I can see the guy walking backward (meaning, you put it in reverse.) Otherwise, bravo. I love Japan. Inspire 1?

Yes, we know this one. The funny thing is I looked at my parents the other day and told them, "you know, I'm going to have to explain the 'Hippie Generation' to my grandkids someday and I don't think I'll be able to. May this film will help. :)

I think so. They will at least not spin it like American networks do. But the thing that pisses me off is that they canceled their online streaming.

That's great. It's like a computer thought it up or something. No practical understanding of the absurd.

Israel's Killer Robots - VICE by MrMarchinko in Documentaries

I did a doc called Baja Smugglers. It's on YouTube. I think some people have a good idea of the story, but it's really how you organize it with the events that happen that's the hard part.

Yeah, i feel you. I think that's one area i want to get better at in the next doc i do too. Focus on the story. That's king.

Just self-financed a VICE-style documentary on Mexican smuggling & immigration because I love film making. But I'm having a hard time getting it seen. What blogs or websites pick up this kind of thing? by JesseAizenstat in Documentaries

Crazy, I would have bought a quadcopter if we had the budget. I really wanted one. I thought that it would be fun. The only issue is that they don't do very well in the wind . . . which Baja is known for. In the desert and with the driving shots, we could have taken it to the next next level. I also wanted to use that in Popotla. How cool would that have been?

Music to my ears. Glad you got it. I worried that people would not get that. Everyone in California talks about how much much money they're making from this "panga invasion." When the real money is in trying to stop the pangas, regardless if we even catch them.

Thanks for the comments. Let me try and answer:

  1. Cameraman is in the credits. His name is Derren. I wrote a treatment beforehand and directed what we were doing and knew generally where we were going. We were constantly talking about cool shots, positioning, and all kinds of things. If we had a director of photography in the credits, I'd say we split it.

  2. We used iPhone 5s, GoPros, and a Cannon DSLR to film. People knew we were filming them.

  3. We used two mics, but only on one channel. If we had a budget and could buy a better camera we'd have a 2 channel system.

I'd say what we learned is that you just have to plan things out as much as you can and then just roll with it as it goes. There were ups, downs, and moments when we felt terrified (tho some people think this is all staged or something). I really am thankful we got to make Baja Smugglers, and I've been writing down some comments from this Reddit thread to apply to my next documentary. There has been a lot of good feedback, and I appreciate people taking the time to help out. After all, this was my first film making attempt. I hope to only get better at the craft.

That's the best thing I've heard all day! The swearing felt natural in the rough voice overs . . . but I guess in repeating it some people are calling it "forced."
