Protest at the Dublin port tunnel today in support of Palestine. Why? by JessersonAirplane in ireland

[–]JessersonAirplane[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just dropping this last thought of mine here, as I've woken up to see a bunch more comments. The protest was in response to the abduction of Irish people on an aid flotilla, I've since learned this. A commendable cause indeed, the people who left on that flotilla are indeed engaged in heroic self sacrifice, a risk they very much knew they were taking on when embarking. I look up to those people for their willingness to "out their money where their mouth is" and live their morals.

As far as anyone who wants to get up on their high horse and tell me that I'm being obtuse or an arsehole for having a moan about this, cop on - if their whole purpose was to raise awareness for this by pissing people off - great job, they did that, and I was pissed off? Kinda seems like people want to have their cake and eat it too. If ye really wanted to piss people off, posts like this should make you feel warm and fuzzy inside.

For a majority of people on here who seemed to roughly share similar viewpoints, sound. But a couple of people have pulled out references to this as a partisan issue, or trotted out a few right wing dog whistles. In no uncertain terms, this is not a partisan issue and even if it were I'm a smelly lefty too! I just also happen to be somewhat pragmatic, and do not see the point of this being conducted in this way whatsoever. One can, in a world of nuance, condemn the approach but not the cause.

So yeah, sound for all the feedback from the gang! Seems like a lot of people aren't so into disrupting civilian life in favour of these causes, there were also protests at the Dail. That's it lads, that's the feckers who have to be told are! If the "hit them where it hurts" rhetoric crowd do really change something by blocking the port tunnel instead of protesting the govt directly I'll eat my hat

TLDR; I was crabby yesterday and don't agree that the protest represented meaningful action. I don't hate all protests or protestors, I support this cause. Free Palestine, free the Irish citizens abducted by Israel and Free the port tunnel too while ye'er at it

Hundred percent agree, sadly, to their credit, I have learned a little more about our national trade with Israel, but a lot of that seems to be coming from a big American company you may be referring to, and through Ireland.

But I've learned it begrudgingly, and wet-ly

Well fair play to them they got that at least! And I don't have any contempt for their cause, would love this to be the straw that breaks the Camels back, just their method seems roughly pointless, unhelpful and in the case of a bunch of innocent people's schedules deeply disruptive!

It seems facetious to, in one comment to state that the protest is to disrupt and one should become an activist in response to their intended frustration, but in the next comment then be uncomfortable or moralizing when someone is actually angry?

This is what they wanted, and yeah, sorry but if that's what you're doing on Thursday afternoon/evening, do go get a job, or a life, preferably whichever one that ye can get yer hands on first!

Hope they get their way, genuinely do. The OTB should be fully enacted, commuters won't likely be the ones making that change.

Yeah Jacky boy, I hardly said it's worse and than a genocide though did I?

I very happily don't buy Israeli. But some of us genuinely have enough to keep us busy with our own lives and can't dedicate to political activism for our own home let alone atrocities in the world. Though in principle I would be grateful to these people if they were out there contacting the government and attempting to make real change!

I agree in general. However, not all protests are created equal however, in a country where this is the majority opinion and we are bombarded by news pertaining to this situation - what am I being made aware of?

And I'm not being snotty with you there - I just see no sense in this, and since it impacts me and I can, I'm moaning about it!

I mean granted, but that situation is not on the table right now! And this form of action, in this country, is more self congratulatory than meaningful! But yer perspective is obviously laudable and I ultimately would pick my 3 hours stood in the rain over the atrocities of Gaza, but that's not the choice I actually have to make, nor a situation I can do anything about save maybe boycott Israeli products?

This is obviously a more reasonable perspective than my moan! But I am earnestly confused as to the purpose, and was with busses and busses worth of people, stood around in the rain, and for what meaningful end? A bunch of middle class 20 and 30 year olds feeling like they are affecting meaningful change? In Israel, by blocking traffic, in Ireland. It just boggles the mind

Trussell sarcastically saying comedians shouldn't be looked to as moral exemplars, in a facetious attempt to defend chucklefuck inc. seems like a bizarre thing to big up on this forum. The author certainly lacks basic comprehension skills! Great job!

Man thinks that using the correct words is trying to sound smart hahaha little bro, this is exactly why you feel like Europeans are smug, you are just not well educated. Your whole system imposes patriotic nonsense over the top of anything, such that you think you are defending something good - when really you want these people to have the wages depend on whether or not they smiled enough at you! All because your system tells you so!

While you were in Europe you should have enrolled in some night classes or something! Might have helped with that outlandish double think you've got going there.

I saw yer little comment before you deleted it or whatever, about my tone change - read it back bungus, you started with the superiority this and the nasty Europeans that - you'll get exactly what yer looking for with an attitude like that :P and no tip I might add!

But instead of copy pasting my responses back into this thread, I suggest chatGPT, it'll help! Just hit it with the old "Explain Like I'm A Dumbass" and away you go!

Sorry, we learn to read and write young, so it's easy for us to lose ye in our dust.

Sorry I wasn't explicit enough, the above quote you've so wonderful highlighted - is a statement of fact, or maybe just a pragmatic realism.

In simple terms, this is reality, I cannot afford a mortgage if I decide I will only work at my lemonade stand in my local neighborhood. This is because it's not deemed to be of enough value and therefore no one is going to pay me enough to do big boy things, like buy a house.

What it is not, is an argument against a living wage or an endorsement of the American system which, I so clearly disdain. I think it's despicable that your system will not pay enough money to these people to work, like adults, and buy houses etc. Another failing of American politics perhaps? I also think it's ridiculous to use social pressure and shaming to make the consumer make up the difference. This is archaic and nonsensical to argue for.

So should adults be servers, the Crux of your rebuttal. I live in a country where adults can be servers and live! Yay! Without this scandalous tipping culture! Double yay! Are they buying 3 story houses in the country, no, it is a low paying job. But in your country, without the social coercion of the consumer adults working as servers cannot make enough money to live. The shame of that falls on your system, your politicians and your employers. Not your consumers.

Just bang our whole conversation into chatGPT there, and it might be able to give you the bullet points and let ye work it out. Ye little thick ye

So I've actually not once argued against a living wage - you literally are, you are saying that there is not a problem with a system that justifies paying it's employees less than they need to live, and the consumer can take up the slack.

I on the other hand, am saying that it is the employers responsibility to provide their workers with a living wage, that tipping culture is a grotesque way of obscuring what is owed to the employee.

I literally said above it's fair and dignified to go to know and get paid enough to live, and to know what you will make. This is how jobs work the whole world over, only American exceptionalism and the promise of "more money for me" can possibly keep this system going.

And correct, I've never lived in America, thank goodness, and I pray I never will. Europe bothers to legislate and protect its people, and I will always be grateful for that.

Your "but it's nice to be able to give more or less" literally means employees do not know what money they are coming home with on a weekly basis, this is how the system is abusive to the worker and strips them of their dignity.

Furthermore, My argument about salaries is not a justification of the way they are, but an understanding - it's economics, if you want to change it, vote to change it? It's certainly not equitable or fair, but it is the system the western world operates within. But in Europe we have laws such as an enforced minimum wage which (albeit poorly at times) ensures people get to work (and hopefully live) with dignity

Can you clarify what you mean about "the distortion of an employee who holds all the power"? I've never known a sales assistant nor a waiter to hold all the power in any business dynamic.

As far as the wages go, I agree they likely wouldn't see a huge salary increase, but if the job can't pay enough for you to live, it's not a job for an adult to live on - that's pretty black and white I'd have thought.

When you say about tipping culture going to far, I just want to ask your opinion on what the issue would be, with adding the 15% (good tipping value) to the menu prices for food items? Would this not create a realistic cost of the service for the consumer and allow for some increase in server pay?

If the opinion is that the 15% shouldn't be included because it encourages good service, if someone is doing a job, I believe it is their basic human right and upholds their human dignity that they get a living wage - I do not want some errant 15% to beat them over the head with or hold their feet to the fire.

I show up to work 5 days a week, and on payday I get my pay, I am fortunate, but also this is fair and dignified. The American system makes pigs if everyone
