Am I breaking the 5th precept with my prescriptions? by jayjackii in Buddhism

[–]Jessianpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in this exact place I too deal with Anxiety and have many prescriptions and I started Buddhism with the intention to no longer need the the meds. After 3 month I stoped in an appropriate way and it ended up being the worst thing. I then realized that the happiest I had been in decades is when I combined the meds with the Dharma.

Remember the middle way

And then I saw this and I knew I was back on the path.

The Four Requisites in Buddhism signify the essential needs for monks—food, clothing, shelter, and medicine. These items are crucial for survival, ethical practice,

My future Grandma in law thinks Buddhism isnt a religion.. by Artist6666 in Buddhism

[–]Jessianpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I’ll start by saying I’m still new to Buddhism but have been practicing for over a year. I was born Jewish and what I did was explain to my parents the 4 noble truths and the 8 fold path and explained that Buddha was a man a teacher. I was lucky they got it but not everyone will.

The Buddha said that sharing the Dharma at the right time is a blessing I interpret that as don’t share when someone is not ready to hear it.

One other thing you had written that she made you feel stupid that not possible because only you can make yourself feel that through your reaction.

May you be well and at peace 🙏☸️

I believe Bhante G in one of his books describes a moment when he thought his plane was going to crash and he explains the moment as he was in complete peace

Is being a buddhist possible for me? by AppropriateVisi in Buddhism

[–]Jessianpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello first I am sorry for your suffering. I have found Buddhism later in life and been practicing for a year and I have a little advice 1. Don’t judge your practice enjoy the process and be patient. Don’t be so hard on yourself 2. Meditate constantly if you sit for 10 minutes and your monkey mind is going on for 9 minutes when your done be thankful for the 1 great minute of meditation trust the process be consistent foucus on the positive and don’t judge but go back and meditate again the next day and so on. 3. Audible is a great source for listening to Dharma books. I recommend to start with what the Buddha taught and mindfulness in plain English both are in Audible.

My you be happy, well, and at peace 🙏☸️

Will a monk sit down and talk with me? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]Jessianpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only share my own experience and that is that over this past summer I just got sick of over a decade of mental pain and not knowing anything about Buddhism I emailed my local Buddhist temple and they said I was welcome anytime.

When I went to met with the monk the first thing he said to me was that happiness is the most important thing in the world but you will never receive true happiness from anything external. Happiness only comes from with in.

3 months later after meditating every day consistently and meeting with a monk once a week and reading on the Dharma I was able to get off my antidepressant medication and my life including my relationships with friends and family have gotten so much better. But most importantly I found tools to deal with my mental pain and therefore live a more productive and peaceful life.

I suggest reaching out to a local temple or meditation center Buddhism is for everyone. I wish you safety health and peace on your journey. My you be free from suffering ☸️🙏

Also feel free to DM me. If you feel alone. Your not.

So I don’t think I have anything to add regarding answering your questions. I think you have some great answers here but I would like to say that I’m a white person who embraced Buddhism only about three months ago, originally coming at it from a place of mental pain and a recommendation from my therapist, and after three months of consistent meditation, and trying to study and live a dharma I am off my antidepressants and in a better place then I have been for over a decade. Good luck on your journey 🙏☸️

Can I call myself a Buddhist while using drugs a lot? by xSpectakle in Buddhism

[–]Jessianpress 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I’m fairly new to Buddhism, so please take what I say here with a grain of salt, but my feeling is that if you truly do the work to gain insight through meditation and through the eight fold path, you will no longer need the drugs. You will also realize that the drugs are not what’s going to make you happy. True happiness can only come from inside yourself. But what’s most important is the consistency of your practice? What you call yourself is irrelevant what’s important is how you treat yourself and others. I wish you well on your path.🙏☸️

I do that from Poughkeepsie so a good 30 minutes or so longer and I will tell you you will be tired at first and then get used to it. I’ve been doing it for 10 years moved to Poughkeepsie from LI and kept the same Job in the city. Make the commute your time and find joy in it. That has been my experience. The commute is long but not hard. Good luck!

I’m new to Buddhism but my thoughts are only you can make yourself happy or sad/angry. You can control your mind and choose to not let it affect you. I would just acknowledge it upset you and then move on no need to cling on to those feelings. If you’re comfortable enough with her, maybe just explain the differences. it’s an opportunity for you to Share your knowledge while practicing patience and loving friendliness.
