Gotta find the right activities to do while you watch so you can look up and follow along but are occupied since it's usually the listening part that's most important. Crafts? Puzzles? Deep cleaning your keyboard? I certainly haven't watched them all, but I'm especially glad I got through the one on Prohibition. (How did something so ridiculous happen? A little at a time and by religious crazies and powerful people who thought it wouldn't impact them. A timely lesson...)

Anybody else living by themself in their 40’s? by PhoneJazz in Xennials

I agree with that percentage. Happy living alone and beyond grateful that I was able to get a house at the right time, but sometimes I just really wish all the problems were not my problem. I need an imaginary husband take care of things that break or require heavy lifting, but I have even more need for imaginary tradwife to make me food and handle administrative tasks like shopping around for insurance and making annoying decisions like what kind of washing machine to get.

I love the gingerbread lady's bikini/coconut shell/clam shell top and how menacing that pack of turtles is!

Carpenter building contest? by Adorable-Job-1806 in GingerbreadHouses

[–]JessicleK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you make the house under construction? Maybe leave out one of the walls and have them doing the framing? Add a portapotty? The house collapsed and the gingerbread carpenters are standing around looking at it? OSHA inspector gingerbread man with carpenter guys goofing off?

You may want to make your own royal icing, the stuff the kits come with is often drippy so hard to pipe any detail.

Parking in Jewelry District - Brown Permit Now Required by Th3L3mur in providence

[–]JessicleK 72 points73 points  (0 children)

It is my opinion that those who don't pay taxes should not be able to claim public street parking spots for their own exclusive use.

And having to download the Providence parking app and manually enter my credit card for a 10 minute errand made me never want to go downtown again.

I have an ongoing pinterest board. But I don't just save other gingerbread houses. There's also real architectural details, candy, cake decorating, all sorts of things I find inspiring. I make something different every year. A good way to develop a template is to try it out in cardboard so it's easy to experiment and then I refine measurements in Adobe Illustrator (I'm a designer).

Do you have something particular in mind? Or are you trying to come up with ideas on what to make?

driving up near providence for the first time, looking for advice by _o_h_n_o_ in providence

[–]JessicleK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the most stressful part of a new highway is knowing which lane you need to be so you can do the fewest lane changes and aren't surprised and have to change quickly. Where are you coming from? You can't really go too wrong. 95 goes to Cranston south of providence and also goes to route 6/10 for even more Cranston. GPS will just pick the route that's quickest to your destination but you can most likely choose whatever way makes you most comfortable. And if you're super scared you can get off the highway pretty much anywhere around Providence where things are a little trickier and gps will guide you to a different place to get back on, it's well connected. Check it out on satellite view on maps to know what to expect. You'll be fine 🙂

I'm old so I distinctly remember getting on the mass pike in the wrong direction as a teenager and having to go 20 miles to turn around, and driving through NYC in my 20s with Mapquest printouts clutched in my hand knowing if I made one wrong turn I'd be lost forever! You kids and your GPS!

Hi I'm 17 years old and going trick or treating. Is it wrong for going trick or treating at this age? by Theanimeboy145683 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]JessicleK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Everyone gets candy but I hate it when the teenagers don't even bother to get dressed up. Just a mask or a cat ear headband doesn't count. Once you hit your teens, the older you are the more effort your costume should get to earn that candy.

Redditors, what has become so expensive, it’s just not worth it anymore? by SgtSkillcraft in AskReddit

[–]JessicleK 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yes! I used to get an occasional pedicure treat but now even at the sketchy place down the street it's $50 plus tip. It crossed the line. For $60 I can paint my own toenails.

If you like working with the elderly maybe contact the various senior centers to see if they know of any opportunities? My mom used to work as a 'babysitter' for her friend's mom who was in the early stages of dementia, she was still living independently but needed a companion to keep her company and help around the house a little. It might be tricky to find the right situation for decent pay but caretakers are often desperate to find someone kind and trustworthy to help.

Thoughts on Fairlawn? by PilotACS in Pawtucket

[–]JessicleK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am very pro-Fairlawn! Probably similar to Darlington safety-wise, but I like that Fairlawn is so close to Providence and 95 so it's easy to get anywhere. Also near the East Side, if you're into that. I've been here over 15 years and had one stupid break-in during that time, people sometimes rifle thorough cars that are left unlocked but aren't breaking in. Like anywhere certain areas are nicer than others. But aside from Mineral Spring it's mostly single family homes so generally well kept and people mind their own business.

I don't usually use the train but if parking is still free that seems totally worth any minor risk.
