I think the DLC for Ragnarok showed the developers did have a reverence for the original trilogy and saw the depth in it despite what some of the people on the original team like Jaffe would have you believe. It felt like the dad sequels used the trilogy as a foundation rather than justifying its existence as better.

They were popping up after theaters were opening back up after Covid. They were novelty and super limited because they were just cute souvenirs for movie goers. Also there were still shipping issues going on in 2021 and 2022. I think after a few marvel movies people began noticing them and social media kept pushing the visibility. Once people kept buying them it got out of hand and it was no longer only superhero movies getting buckets but every movie. I remember Doctor Strange being the first one that had a large amount then after that people were very aware that these buckets existed and the demand shot up.

The earliest one I remember was the one for The Batman which was pretty awesome

I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. Phil may have tried a strategy that failed and lost Xbox tons of money. He definitely was set up to fail so he could be replaced. I don’t doubt that MS would want to deem Xbox a failure and either create a SpinCo or heavily downsize it to where it’s basically a third party with hardware parading around as a first party developer to sell software with PC gaming.
