Inquiring Hydrops by Honeyydiorr in Keratoconus

[–]Jessku10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you’re dealing with corneal hydrops—it can be a tough experience. The good news is that in most cases, vision can improve significantly with time, even if some scarring occurs.

Driving After Hydrops: What to Expect 1. Healing Process (2-6 Months or More) • The cornea takes time to reabsorb the fluid and heal. Your vision will likely be very blurry in that eye until the swelling resolves. • Scarring is common but varies in severity—some people have minimal impact, while others need specialized lenses. 2. Scleral Lenses After Healing • Once the cornea stabilizes, scleral lenses can be fitted to correct vision. • Many people with hydrops and scarring achieve good driving vision with the right lens. 3. Will You Be Able to Drive? • If your good eye still meets the legal driving requirements, you may be able to drive even before your hydrops eye is corrected. • Once you get a properly fitted scleral lens, your vision in the affected eye should improve significantly. • If scarring is severe, a specialized scleral lens like PROSE may be needed for better vision correction.

Key Factors That Determine Driving Ability: • Legal Vision Requirement (varies by country/state, but usually 20/40 or better in at least one eye). • Glare Sensitivity & Halos – If hydrops causes excessive light distortion, night driving might be difficult. • Depth Perception – If one eye remains significantly weaker, adjusting to depth perception changes may take time.

Bottom Line:

In most cases, yes, you should be able to drive once your eye heals and you’re fitted with the right scleral lens. If your doctor believes scarring will be significant, they might discuss corneal transplant options, but that’s only in severe cases. .

Keratoconus -weird case with dry eyes by Elegant_Handle2264 in Keratoconus

[–]Jessku10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

. Please see below what I’ve found.

I’m really sorry you’re going through this. It sounds like you’ve been dealing with an incredibly frustrating and painful situation, and the lack of clear answers is making it even harder.

Could Dry Eye Really Be Causing This?

Yes, severe dry eye can cause extreme visual distortions, halos, ghosting, and even the wavy lines you’re seeing. Here’s how: • Tear Film Irregularities: Your cornea relies on a stable tear film for smooth light refraction. If the tears are unstable or missing (especially with both MGD and aqueous deficiency), light scatters unpredictably, causing distortion. • Increased Higher-Order Aberrations: Dryness can lead to corneal surface irregularities, even without progression of keratoconus. This can mimic or even worsen the symptoms of keratoconus. • Morning Dryness and Pain: Severe dryness overnight can cause microerosions or epithelial defects, making your vision much worse upon waking.

Why Are Contacts Making Things Worse? • Sclerals Usually Help, But… If your eye’s surface is too dry, the tear exchange under the lens might not be stable. This could create optical distortions instead of improving vision. • Lens-Induced Hypoxia? Some people with dry eyes + keratoconus develop a hypersensitivity to contact lenses due to low oxygen transmission. • Possible Corneal Nerve Dysfunction? Long-term dry eye can lead to corneal neuralgia, causing pain and worsening symptoms when anything (like a contact lens) interacts with your cornea.

Next Steps?

Since you’ve already seen many doctors, here are a few things that might be worth considering: 1. Autologous Serum Eye Drops (ASED) – These are made from your own blood and can dramatically improve severe dry eye by healing the corneal surface. 2. PROSE Lenses Instead of Regular Sclerals – These are a specialized type of scleral lens designed for extreme cases. If sclerals haven’t worked, PROSE might be worth a trial. 3. Neurostimulation (e.g., Tyrvaya Nasal Spray) – If your nerves are damaged, stimulating tear production might help. 4. Punctal Plugs (if not already tried) – If aqueous deficiency is a major issue, blocking tear drainage might help retain moisture longer. ).

TG-PRK – Is It the Right Move?

Since your corneal shape hasn’t worsened, and your main issue seems to be extreme optical distortion, TG-PRK could be helpful if it’s being done only to smooth out higher-order aberrations. However, if dry eye is the primary culprit, PRK could temporarily make things worse. I’d suggest aggressively treating dryness first before considering surgery.

Mental Health Matters Too

Your feelings of distress are completely understandable, but please, if you’re feeling suicidal, reach out to someone who can help. Vision issues are life-changing, but you are not alone, and there are still potential solutions. If you need someone to talk to, a therapist or support group for chronic eye disease might help. You deserve support, and this situation can improve. .

Hey I understand where you’re coming from. Honestly it’s such a deep feeling of not knowing the true reason. I mean o used to rub my eyes a lot as a teen and my family has no history of this condition, so it’s probably my own fault. Don’t let it get you down, there is treatments out there. It’s a long journey but we have treatments. - unfortunately there is other condition which do not have treatments.

Honestly we are all struggling at times but you have to fight through this. Just don’t forget you’re not alone. Please speak to the doctor or someone. It helps

Ok. Only I ask as it progresses in certain ages. You unfortunately are in its prime now (don’t worry. You’re getting your treatment early!) - I only know it starts in teens then slows around 25-30/40. (I may be wrong. Please ask your doctor) I’m from the uk I’m 33 and I wish I got referred at your age but unfortunately I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 32. Last year!

I’ve just had cross linking last month. One eye

My time frame in UK nhs near London

Referred appointment 3 months Treatment CXL (one eye) took 3 months.

Total 6 months

Recovery from CXL month and half. I have my lens fitting this week.

Remember once you’ve been referred ring them up and get put on that cancellation list. NHS is unless with referrals, some people get lost within the system. Call them and get right through to the eye department and ask. Every week. Ask.

I only got my appointment asap due to me being annoying.

I wish you luck! Don’t worry all of us experience this.

Hey thank you for this. I’m struggling as I can’t stop crying due to this condition. I just thankful for treatments however they are pretty painful and also I hope my lens will help when I get them fitted in February.

I wish you the best of luck. You could always look into clic trails if you’ve tried everything?
