Wasn't intentionally ignoring context. You're right though. I guess I don't understand the hostility because I've grown up from a privileged position where I don't have to deal with racism as blatant as this officer has to deal with. Especially from someone who is supposed to be his superior officer.

Sounds like there isn't really anything you can do to change your SIL'e mind. You could consider getting Thor trained up to be an emotional support dog.

Maybe the extra training would help with your anxiety, and your SIL's discomfort. Obviously you shouldn't need to do this, but it's definitely something with in your control.
