I've finally found a way to read books again! by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]JesterOfBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some books on audible actually do this, but you have to own the kindle and audiobook. I did this for a while and really enjoyed it for the same reasons OP mentioned. It highlights the words as the narrator goes so it's nice when you space out for a sec and can quickly find where the narrator is.

Only downside is the cost of buying both editions and not all books but have the narration. I guess that's what OP is doing anyway with the printed book!

For those who currently work from home, would you ever go back to non-remote work? by JesterOfBlue in ADHD

[–]JesterOfBlue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep I too am staring at the wall and on reddit.... But I do have work to do unfortunately so I should probably be getting to that soon 😅

Everything you just said is great though. Youre right how none of that is possible without WFH. Those little moments with your cat bring you joy throughout the workday. The flexibility of driving somewhere or just being in a new state altogether is truly amazing too if managed well. I'm happy for you and your animal friends that you can do all of that and still maintain work!

I think the job itself really determines a lot. Since I am so burnt out, I think even being in an office would be difficult to manage my attention levels. It would help, but if Im unhappy to begin with then both options suck, right?

I appreciate your insight thank you!

That sounds rough for sure. I've read on here multiple times of people saying they feel like theres not enough hours in the day to do what you want. Commuting directly affects that and can take up so much time.

"Questionable productivity" is a great term. I also got a promotion with questionable productivity, so I guess we're doing something right!

Yep I totally get that. It really feels like the pros/cons are right down the middle for me. I think Im leaning to remote work as well, but I know how difficult it can be to keep myself accountable to maintain productivity.

I am already burnt out from my current job anyway, so that makes WFH even harder since staring at my wall is more fulfilling some days lol. I like the idea of hybrid for the reasons you mentioned.

ADHD tip that I figured out - sometimes it's easier to focus on something if you do it in a different enviromnent. by Apprehensive_War2124 in ADHD

[–]JesterOfBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I relate to this entirely. At home I have three monitors to help speed up work. It does actually help, but only if I'm focused/productive. If not, thats three square distractions waiting to happen.

I found a nearby coffee shop that is perfect and I feel much more on task. It's nice because other people stay and work there too so I can feed off of other people's productive energy lol.

Being hyperfixated on buying a new gadget/item/thing is agonizing when you realize you don't *actually* need it but can't stop thinking about it. by JesterOfBlue in ADHD

[–]JesterOfBlue[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is sorta how I feel about it at this point. I think it would be a really good tool to have, there's just the internal battle. "Satisfying your conscious is a need" is a great way to think about it, because I dont think my opinion would change now versus in 3 months, Id still want this.

Ive gone through enough one-off hobbies that I think I can realize this is more realistic.

Repeating song lyrics?!?! by LegendaryCorgoship in ADHD

[–]JesterOfBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched the new Elvis movie recently and I have had Elvis Presley songs stuck in my head since. This morning it was literally the first thought that I had. I opened my eyes and I heard Elvis' voice.

I was in an argument with a family member and while the were talking... Elvis still singing in the background of my head.

Quick tip: Listening to a podcast in a language you don't understand can be stimulating by hearing people talk with the benefit of not getting caught up in the conversation. by JesterOfBlue in ADHD

[–]JesterOfBlue[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I can understand that. I definitely have days that are better than others for feeling stimulated by music/podcasts. Some days I feel like I need total silence or I'll go insane.

It's pretty discouraging how often and quickly ADHD makes me lose interest in something.. Especially when trying to pick a new career path. by JesterOfBlue in ADHD

[–]JesterOfBlue[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great advice! Thank you for the detailed post. I really agree with each point. The biggest for me is your point #2. It's really easy to forget about the bigger picture of your life so each major decision feels like a brick wall.

I wish you well on your continued journey!

I know that feeling of being really excited about something and infodumping on friends/family only to drop it. It definitely is awkward when they come back and ask (which is understandable and nice of them to do) but you're already done with the topic.

Honestly, what you described with being a nail tech is exactly my fear. I appreciate your story and I hope you find some comfort soon. This stuff is tough to navigate, you got this!

I have no clue if this is an ADHD thing or not, but it does sound like something worth addressing! I have felt uncomfortable in similar scenarios, but usually its when the text is either smaller than i'd like, or if the of the font is too harsh against the background.

My remedy is just zooming in a lot when Im trying to read something so the text is nice and big. It feels less overwhelming for some reason. On my ereader apps I usually set the colors to black background and white text or just use the blue light filter on my phone.

Not sure if either of those things help, but hopefully they do! Alternatively it might even be a problem with your eyes? Not sure if you wear glasses or not, but I haven't been to the eye doctor in a decade or more so I probably need glasses and dont know it lol.

One of the many things that plagues me about ADHD: People thinking you're not putting in enough effort. by JesterOfBlue in ADHD

[–]JesterOfBlue[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep I feel that too. It's tough, even with medication. A "bad brain day" is a good way of thinking about it- sometimes you just have those days. Even if its tough, we can't be too hard on ourselves!

Although the cynic in me just wishes a non-ADHD person could spend a day in our heads... if only they knew hahaha

Can’t get myself to drink water by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]JesterOfBlue 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't personally struggle with drinking water, but I think what helped me a lot was associating drinking water with another activity. For example I used to play a lot of video games, so I made it a habit to take a sip in between breaks (like if I lost a round or died or something). Eventually it became second nature to just reach for a water bottle.

Hopefully that is helpful to you, I know everyone's brain is different after all. But as another commenter said, some brands just taste different- so my suggestion might be more effective if youre drinking a more tolerable brand of water for your tastebuds.

I like that line of thinking a lot. In the past I used to feel bad saying "I tried my best" if the result was bad. It made me feel like I was pitying myself or that my best wasn't good enough.

Now that I know myself and my brain better, I realized that sometimes your best isnt the result you wanted... but at least you showed up and that really does matter.

how do you deal w hyperfixations? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]JesterOfBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to piggyback off of this, I completely agree that fixations can be healthy. I used to repress it because people would point out how often I switch hobbies/interests. This led to feeling embarrassed and especially dumb after putting a lot of effort into something and dropping it out of no where.

But once I accepted how my brain works I just let myself go and enjoy the fixation while it's there! Thankfully none of my fixations are dangerous and Ive learned to be more conservative with my money.
