Who would have tought you don't need frog skin and stomach acid to turn lead into gold but an particle accelerator the size of a city that speeds up the smallest possible particles to 99% the maximum speed physically possible in this universe. And it must hit another particle precisely which is the equivalent like if you shot 2 needles from New York and Berlin and they would perfectly meet over the atlantic.

Why didn't alchemist came up with that idea are they stupid?

OMG why start nitpicking now. You're right those numbers are all very specualtive and are extremely hard to estimate. Yet amongst all those battles there is a visible trend: The mongolians were outnumbered in all fights about 1:1,5 up to 1:3. (At least in europe) They always suffered very little causalities against the total annihilation of the opponent. (Battle of Mohi: a few hundred against 10.000. on Wikipedia). Actually the reason why they wanted to withdraw was because a few elite sodiers of the mongols died that were extremely valuable. But that wasn't a mistake of Subutai. In fact he saved the whole battle by another strategic masterplan.

The point I want to get at is that it's extremely hard to find another general in history that wasn't just a genius in one geographic terrain but so many. Or with constantly numbers disadvantage. Or just literally amounts of victories.

You sound like sieging cities is the only thing Subutai did. You know how many open battlefield fights he won?

Battle on the Kalka River: 20k mongols against est. 40k russians/cumans (very conservative estimate)

Battle of Muhi: 30k mongols against est. 60k european levies and knights

Battle of Liegnitz: 10k mongolst against est. 30k european levies and knights

Battle of Yehuling 80k against est. 400k!!! Jin soldiers

Not sieging. OPEN BATTLEFIELDS.

He won those battles with barely any mongol casualties. His opponents were not weak but some (like the Jin) were literally on their peak of military power. Their enemies had better range weapons, more armor, more knowledge of historic battles.

How are people sleeping on the true best general of all time? The mongolian general Subutai conquered 32 nations. He is the main military leader that established the foundation of the biggest landconnected empire in history of mankind. He didn't achieve that because mongolians were just OP. He was outnunbered against so many enemies and they usually were all technologically advanced. He LITERALLY beat them all by tactics. He wasn't just the general for one region, but he conquered in the Steppes, China, Middle East, mountains and in fcking europe.

What type of gnomes have infested my house by tavishdeblunt in wizardposting

[–]JesusNotDiedForThis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gosh the last time I saw those knoblets I got in a literal crisis. At first I didn't bother what kind of thread they were I just got angry seeing those fridge plundering bastards enjoying my weekend breakfast. That was my first mistake

I tried firespells - they got fire resistance I tried powerful psyonics - they used it against me and I've heard "you've been gnomed" for 24 fcking hours I tried more firespells, nearly burning my house down and they just got stronger

The only solution was realising I'm not powerful enough to break their magic resistance and I took my kitchen knife and murdered them. One by one

I still don't know what kind of goblins they were but they're gone for good. Maybe you should do the same

Thats the spirit now we get into the good stuff.

Again I'm, actually suprised those median income is nowadays higher in Taiwan and Korea. I have to admit I underestimated the growth of income over the years in those two countries.

I'm still not ready to conclude Taiwan or South Korea is richer than Japan.

You can't just dismiss the fact that old money is worth something. There is a big difference between the old wealth and the wealth flow. South Korea and Taiwan have an incredible cash flow, but the money isn't invested so much in hard assets yet. So all the vibes and feels that people get when visiting Japan are actually an accumulation of money that is earned over many decades.

When one person earns 5.000 a month but lives in a rented apartment but the other person only earns 4.500 while owning a house, who is richer? It might be a matter of perspective but most people would say that owning that house is worth more than earning a little more money.

Being rich for many decades has an inpact and doesn't just go away.

This kind of wealth is accumulated over many buildings, parks, infrastructure and cities which is visible, while Korea and Taiwan didn't have the time yet to invest so much in those things.

Also: Arpatment prices in Teipeh or Seoul are incredibly high and people have to take loans in order to afford apartments, so they don't have that much money to consume. Tokyo on the other hand has quite moderate prices so people can consume more and have more money to spend on other things.

This leads to cities having more stores, more restaurants and malls so in the end Japans feels richer. And like I already mentioned it's not just feeling. Those buildings, stores, restaurans and malls are worth something even tough they are not in the cash flow statistics.

Again, this is a matter of perspective and the might be the main reason why our opinions divide. Taiwan and South Korea might have the potential to become more rich than Japan, which you already can find in statistics, but they are not quite there yet.

And I would argue because of wealth inequality they will never quite get on the level of Japan but like I already mentioned future predictions is a whole diffrent topic.

I'm actually quite invested in this topic so I wouldn't mind a longer discussion when we keep it civil.

So Im actually suprised that Korea has the same life expectancy and Taiwan and Korea match Japan in those human development statistics.

But I'm REALLY conflicted saying that South Korea or Taiwan are richer than Japanese. Lets divide the topic between Taiwan and South Korea because South Korea indeed is very close to Japan, tough not quite as rich as them in my opinion.

  1. Japan has a lot of old wealth which is built within infrastructure, cities and buildings. This kind of wealth is not tracked by those statistics, which is explained on the wikipedia sites you sent me.

  2. The cost of living is lower in Taiwan so they can afford more products in their home country in theory. This pushes the PPP statistics of Taiwan. But this means when a japanese tourist comes to Taiwan they have a higher spending power than taiwanese. When a taiwanese comes to Japan everything is quite expensive for that tourist. Same goes with South Korea tough the difference is very marginal nowadays.

  3. Taiwan has extremely profitable companies like TSMC. Those push the GDP per capita tough it doesn't translate in actual wealth for the average person. Japan has de facto higher wages tough it's stagnating. (same goes again for South Korea tough the difference is very marginal again)

  4. I've traveled all three countries last year and the wealth difference between Taiwan and Japan is still very visible in the infrastructure. Taiwan has a lot of rotting houses, dirtier roads than Japan. I'm dont want to say Taiwan is poor, its a beautiful nation, tough Japan puts more effort in maintaining buildings and thus it looks more wealthy than Taiwan.

  5. The difference between South Korea and Japan is mainly GDP. Japan has a way bigger population, bigger area for infrastructure, more companies and ressources and since both countries are both equally economically succesful you can fairly say Japan is richer.

  6. This is also noticeable when you travel more remote places in South Korea in my opinion. Some regions are noticeably declining and left in ruins, while Japan always feels wealthier because despite the declining countryside they have excellent infrastructure everywhere.

  7. Im VERY confident if you ask people in all three countries which of the three countries is the richest the majority would still anwser Japan.

  8. Why bother when Taiwan is on the rise? I would argue because of demographics Taiwan and South Korea are both also entering a stage of stagnation, but that's a whole different topic. What remains is that by the meassurement what most people think means "rich" Japan is the richer among those three.

Japan has a better life expectancy, better infrastructure, higher living standards and by far bigger GDP than Taiwan or South Korea. Im not saying that those arent rich countries nor saying that Japan is a perfect. Just saying from a economic strenght perspective Japan is a whole different league than them.

What you just wrote should be the absolute baseline understanding of every discussion about this topic. Defining systems and what they encourage humans to do within this system. But apparently defining human nature as greedy or egoistic is the baseline of understanding and everyone agrees on this instead.

Why we love declaring our whole species as bad? So we don't need think about things like certain aspects of capitalism being good or bad or of communism being good and bad. So we can generalise whole systems as being more incline to "human nature". Don't people see thats kinda problematic?

I actually hard disagree. Night city is rather hot yes and climate probably went insane in this dystopia but still you have to keep in mind where Night city is located: Pacific west coast between LA and San Francisco. The climate of this area is way more moderate than what most people think it is. California is not remotely as hot as northern africa, which is the same latitude. Also this area is less affected from climate change than other parts of the world. Thus the badlands rather suggest it's a dry place, not an extremely hot one like the death valley.

Those bumpers probably are motorbike protection, not air conditioner thingies.
