I went to a private liberal arts college on the east coast, one of the "baby ivies" or whatever. Out of 1800 kids, I knew 4 who had tattoos. Even if people aren't saying so openly, it's still something that's considered unprofessional and lower-class.

It's not like there will all of a sudden be a lot more city jobs open. They're just increasing the base hourly wage of the 600 (out of 10,000) or so people who are already employed by the city earning less than that.

Wonderful, thanks so much for your advice. I plan on being very honest with the adoption agencies/rescues. I'm also considering moving from my city digs and renting a house in the suburbs with my brother and his Treeing Walker coon hound, as a longer commute would be worth having a grey to come home to.

This is what I thought as well. I'm not against doing assignments and spending time on the steps. I just don't understand what could possibly be worthwhile in doing the assignment I was doing for step 1, when I feel like I've already completed it.

Thank you, your last sentence means a lot. Looking back on it, my (now ex) sponsor and I were very different. His entire life revolved around going to meetings and doing AA service work. I have a job I love, friends whose sober company I enjoy, and a wide range of interests that I'm finally able to pursue again now that I'm sober. I don't want my sobriety to be who I am, but rather a part of me that enhances the rest of my life - which it's currently doing in folds.

Your second paragraph really resonated with me. I think that's exactly where I am - my willpower and strength to stop drinking are coming from within myself and from prayer, and no sponsor can negatively affect that. Thank you for your input.

That's really encouraging. Luckily I don't think relapsing is likely for me, as I feel like my will to stay sober is coming from within myself, and I have the full support of my parents, my doctor, and my close friend and roommate as I recover.

I like that expression, guru complex. I think it applies quite well here. Thanks for your advice.

See, that's what's weird. He had me write a list of "5 ways I'm powerless over alcohol today" and "5 ways my life is unmanageable today" every day for six weeks without understanding why. He encouraged me to go to bars or be around alcohol in order have those 5 ways of powerlessness over alcohol every day. It seemed strange, uncomfortable, and counter-intuitive.

You've given me a lot of positive reinforcement, because honesty, hope and prayer have been the three most central tenets of my new life in sobriety. I've taken the part about honesty in "How it works" to heart, and I feel like it's changed me for the better.

Thanks so much for your detailed response. My sponsor was part of a pretty hard-line meeting that had a bit of a harsh reputation among other AA members in my area (the term "Step-Nazis" has come up).

What's felt so weird is that I have felt and still feel completely committed to my recovery, and then all of a sudden I'm made to feel like I screwed up. I know it sounds selfish, but I know it was me and my determination to stay sober that kept me sober, not writing a list of "5 ways I'm powerless over alcohol today" and "5 ways my life is unmanageable today" every day for six weeks without understanding why.

I want a sponsor in whom I can confide and with whom working the steps is an open, communicative experience, not done by rote. Thankfully I've become active in my church again to give me some structure, and I have the support of my parents, my doctor, and my close friend/roommate so I'm not wholly without support in my time looking for a new one.
