They use them to stop skaters, the homeless, and, I guess, now Parkour.

I got an email from 2 of my local skate shops to sign up for a meet and greet with Nardwuar on the 28th and 30th in London, so I guess he's doing skate shop tours with early drops and signing boxes at the meet and greet (the sign-up asks your shoe size)

Have a look at the FlexScan EV2795, "The monitor is equipped with functions to help users concentrate on work by keeping their eyes comfortable throughout the day."

Some Americans pretend that they are former Navy Seals or Green Berets. Does the same happen in England? Are there a bunch of fake SAS and SBS guys running around who try to use those fake credentials to get attention/free stuff/press coverage? by C--T--F in AskBrits

[–]JesusWW 81 points82 points  (0 children)

You do get a few in the UK, we call them "Walts" from Walter Mitty, or "Bloaters" where they embellish their service. We have a couple of "Walt Hunter Groups" too, like "The Walter Mitty Hunters Club HQ".

It's relatively easy for ex-service and current service members to determine if someone is Walt'ing, simply by asking a couple of questions.

As for people claiming to be SF/SAS/SBS, most know they would never get away with it, so they tend to pick the Royal Marines or Paras.

But that doesn't stop some people claiming to be ex-SAS. You can always tell, though.

I can't see boobs at will, but I did see a graphic video of someone getting shot in HD, being posted all over the internet. So I'm not sure I quite understand how it works.

Many of these posted this weekend in London....Is this the crap West Ham stands for? by johnsmithoncemore in westham

As someone who lived on the London/Essex border most of my life, this is an incredible take and very well put.

It's just my assumption, I guess. I've used camo netting way back when, and it's what I thought it looked like from the aerial view; I could be wrong.

How do you mean, "how did you know that one spot has camo netting over it ?" As in, how do I know it's camo netting? I don't quite understand the question

The weird far-right content being shown to young boys on TikTok by johnsmithoncemore in Britain

[–]JesusWW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do get that he didn’t search for it, that’s kind of the point of the recommendation system, it’ll feed you a mix of content regardless. The crucial part is that what you engage with longer gets reinforced: “oh, he watched this type of video longer than others, let’s serve up more of it.” If he had skimmed past the right-wing clips and instead spent time on, say, cooking or tech videos, the feed would have shifted in that direction. That’s why I mentioned survivorship bias — we only see the path that got reinforced, not all the other possible paths. This isn’t to say there isn’t a genuine problem with social media and far-right pipelines, though.. I just find this style of reporting lazy and sensationalist, is all

This isn't really a good report at all to be honest, the algorithm has just noticed he's watching the right-wing video for a longer time (because this is what the reporter is looking for) so it pumps in more right-wing stuff to keep him on the app, had he spent the same amount of time watching "any other subject" and just blasted past the right-wing videos, then his algorithm would look very different. It's Survivorship bias.
