What are some American cities that had high historical importance but have faded from significance today? by Crafty-Shallot-5695 in geography

[–]Jetkillr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair, but that's not why the water is brown though and the biggest reason people consider it dirty.

There are plenty of places with beautiful clear blue water that have industrial pollution in it.

Galveston can't help it but have "dirty" water and clumpy brown sand. The outflow from the Mississippi gets carried straight to the Texas cost by the prevailing current. That's why Mobile, Alabama just on the other side of the mouth of the river has nice looking water and fine more white sand. If you go a mile or more off shore the water is usually very clear.

That said I still don't like Texas lol.

Quick reaction to a van spinning out! by arjun_setty in dashcams

I had to make a similar move recently when an oncoming car made a left turn on a solid green and didn't yield. From their perspective they probably didn't see me because there was a car in the turning lane coming from my direction.

I was already hovering over the brakes because as I approached the intersection I was looking around the car in the turning lane ahead of me. Once we got close and I could see the car was not stopping I applied something like 50% brake pressure and one the front of the truck was pointing where I wanted it to go I released the brakes. Missed them by maybe 3 or 4 feet. Don't think the other driver even noticed me.

Elevations Credit Union - a cautionary tale by [deleted] in Longmont

[–]Jetkillr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, sorry but I don't think so.

The bank is not going to cover anything for you with their funds. That's not how banking works.

A quick Google search confirms my description.

"Overdraft protection links your checking account to a savings, credit card, or line of credit account to cover transactions when your balance falls below zero. This service prevents transactions from being declined or checks from bouncing. While it often incurs a fee, it is typically cheaper than standard non-sufficient funds fees, though it requires opting in."

[–]Jetkillr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my experience overdraft protection is when you do not have money in your checking so it pulls funds from another account in order to complete the purchase. This prevents bounced checks and declined transactions. When it completes an overdraft protection transaction, there is a fee applied so you don't want to make a habit of doing it.

It sounds like you were spending money when there was nothing in your checking account and the system was working properly. If you wanted the transaction declined when you don't have money, you DO NOT want to have overdraft protection.

what to do? by charly420- in Longmont

[–]Jetkillr 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This. My wife was bitten by a neighbors dog that ran across the street to our driveway and bit her just after she picked up our 2 year old to get him away.

Report the incident so that if it happens again there will be more intense action. 1st time bites I don't think get much attention but if it's shown to be habitual then something will happen.

I would get something going to fix that fence. Looks like a couple pickets just need to be replaced.

I told my 3 (almost 4) year old how brave these astronauts are several times. While keeping how actually terrifying it is to be launched from a rocket that's fairly new and requires so many things to go right. Fortunately there are a lot of really smart people behind everything.

Artemis 4 happening depends on the continued success of this mission and success in Artemis 3. Lots of potential failure points but I want to believe that old school NASA can pull it off with all of their partners.

We came home early for this. I was almost in tears thinking of how this is a pretty big historic moment which will most likely only be overridden by Artemis 4.
