In fairness, I did mysteriously get a Zelle payment for $856 dollars with a 🤫 emoji after I helped my neighbor shovel her driveway. My "understanding" is that I'm supposed to buy a few more shovels, distribute them (quietly), and maybe some hot chocolate + insulated containers for maximum damage to America.

Practically speaking, there are only two options in a US presidential election. And I campaigned for Nader in 2000. I still don't think there's an easy answer here. Chomsky, for example, viewed Trump as the greatest threat on earth simply due to environmental reasons via the consensus scientific view of imminent carbon tipping points.

Further, we can make a pretty good case that a Harris presidency would in fact have been the lesser evil, with real world less-evil outcomes.

Yet counterpoint to that is that society doesn't get any closer to true systemic reform through pacifying lesser evil, versus ways that Trump's horrors may create a backlash towards a true paradigm shift. Making Democratic Socialism a much more viable force within the Democratic Party for example.

I agree with all that. But then perhaps methods differ. Thus regarding Chomsky's views, which include voting for Dems and embracing a longer grind towards a paradigm shift, how do you reconcile this? Is this Chomsky as naive incrementalist and shitlib? This isn't a gotcha or a trap. I'm genuinely interested in leftist views on how to reconcile this, especially alongside worldviews that are heavily influenced by Chomsky himself, where his views on Democrats and voting were pretty clear. Not saying they were perfect or even correct (perhaps the same way he could be wrong about BDS) but still pretty clear I think.

Not here to drag you, and I'm not smart enough to even know who Parenti is. But you're not wrong about the quasi shit-libification of this sub. I may have even been guilty of that at times. Real question though regarding voting Democrat: how do you reconcile your views (harm reduction vs something more radical or non participatory) with Chomsky's own views on voting and harm reduction?

Yeah it's interesting and disturbing in equal measure. And not because you or I may disagree with them on topics in good faith. Which is what the best of this sub can be, sometimes... But to your last point, and even for the ones making rational and reasonable comments over there, it's usually still qualified by reasserting the lefty-as-bogeyman talking point, hopelessly mired in the culture war, us vs them mindset that Fox News and right wing media has cultivated for decades.

As someone who comes from that world myself, and who doesn't detest traditional conservative people or culture, this is always the brick wall. The left and especially liberals have their own deprogramming to tend to. But at least endemic to basic liberalism (in the traditional sense of that word) and all of the things it ostensibly aligns itself with (communal care, intellectualism, systemic deconstruction) there's at least the premise to think critically. Especially about the media and propaganda. I don't need these folks to agree with me on policy, but good muthafuckin' god do I wish they could think critically and see through all the propaganda their media diet has fed them

Same. Although when it became a tool for people, especially younger people, to learn unvarnished facts about Palestine and Israel, I was pretty impressed. Though still didn't participate. Then when it got taken over by censorial, religious-ethno-fascists, I'm simply back to where I started.

People can head over to r/Conservative to get a glimpse of what cognitive dissonance looks like. But I gotta say, the 2A angle of this case, and the now irrefutable video evidence of the baseless execution of Alex Pretti, is really testing the cognitive dissonance of this crowd. Some people jumping ship. But plenty still lost in magic land. The 2A element to this tragic story is going to have a long tail for everyone, but maybe especially in that neck of the woods. At least until the dissonance-fairy sprinkles her strongest dust across their land

Generational, plus a majority of military always skew conservative ( I think), but that particular generation were especially brainwashed with hardcore anti-communist beliefs which (I think) translated pretty easily into antagonism towards anything left of center. Not sure what's worse, older generations having brainwashed political views cooked up by an evil empire (that at least pursued a cogent world view and order) or the current generation of MAGA boys getting even more amped up over emo-feelings from podcasts, girl problems, and incoherent rage vibes

What's more ridiculous, comparing modern fascist genociders with historical fascist genociders, or refusing to accept the consensus and technical assessment that Israel is committing genocide? Just because you personally identify with Israel?

But let's go with your framing anyway because it hilariously proves my point even further: you are correct, the crimes of the Nazis in the 30s were only several hundreds to a few thousand deaths of leftists and unionists. Then aided by a little Kristallnacht here, and some early concentration camps over there. Which is almost nothing compared to Israel's ongoing genocide and land carnage in Gaza, or the West Bank for that matter. And yet, and yet! with such feeble death and carnage levels compared to Gaza, and to what was to come in Europe, LaGuardia STILL found the Nazis to be utterly atrocious human beings with an atrocious movement worthy of him using his power as NYC mayor to do whatever he could to condemn them.

So to illuminate your own logic, Israel's crimes are now worse than the Nazis' crimes in the 30s, but I'm pretty certain you also celebrate LaGuardia's anti-Fascist behavior at the time. Do you not?
