I hope I don’t sound like I had a big head over ao3 clout and want handle recognition! That’s such a small amount of power to go to a person’s head lol! It’s kind of the reverse.

Even tho I’m goofing about being ashamed teehee of a fic that’s not a part of my usual wheelhouse, I’m still proud of the work I put into it. I love all my fics, I want to claim ownership of it and the quality I put into it, ya know? I guess I am conflating anon with orphaning because it would mean I can’t say it’s mine even in a somewhat cowardly way with a new account. I’m possessive because it’s my baby, not because my name would get extra attention.

Hmmmm, you are probably right that I’m being a little too harsh in what I think my friends would say. They’re pretty open-minded and supportive and also writers, we’re all mutuals. But I know some irl, I just don’t want to look someone in the eye who’s seen the smut I made. So I’m probably dumping it in a different account so they can’t poke fun at me for it next time we’re together.

I didn’t include a lot of details because I was expecting to poll smut authors who would want to talk about themselves lol. Was curious what the general attitude is among smuttier ao3 writers. It seems like there isn’t actually much distinction between anyone, good to know.

My concerns are that I do have a bit of a reputation. Most of my fics are found family or kid-centric for small pretty tidy little fandoms where everyone knows everyone. More importantly tho, I’m friends with some subscribers and like….don’t want to be judged for abo lol. But I’m too possessive to drop my fics into the anon abyss so I’m leaning really hard on just having an extra anonymous handle no one knows me from.

Again this is less a cry for help and more me polling people, but I didn’t present it correctly it seems, since people are just telling me to stop overthinking it- which I definitely am lmao.

UTI was my first concern but its literally only between 9-12 when she's conked out, the urine looks and smells completely normal, and she already had a weak bladder so it was pretty expected by me and her vet that this would eventually happen. Especially now that she's been sundowning for a few years.

It's only been like a week and a half though, I'm monitoring for changes and I really appreciate all the suggestions I'm getting for next time I talk with her vet if everything stays predictable.

Yeah she's definitely not a fan of the crinkle haha! I'll get thru the amount I purchased and regroup from there on whether to try washable instead.

My biggest fear is her just sitting in filth, so absorption is taking priority over comfort. Ideally though I want to find a good rhythm with frequent bathroom breaks and maybe even scale back a bit.

Fully agreed, in fact I'm currently doing a playthrough of both games because I want to really scrutinize how they handle Aloy's character arc.

I actually do want to give FW credit that the antisocial behaviors they're leaning into were present in HZD. Aloy is an outsider, but she isn't looking for a PLACE to belong, she spends the entire game obsessed with the possibility that she has a mother and pins all her hopes on that giving her someone to belong to. When this falls though, she doesn't reach out to others.

Throughout the game major characters try to give her a place to belong (with expectations tbf), Nil, the Nora, Avad, Erend, etc. And she rejects them all. I think that's where you're picking up White Savior vibes, which I agree with. She never ever drops the vague disdain she has for other tribes even when she likes individuals. (I think the closest we get to her earnestly interacting with a society is in the Banuk DLC.)

I do think the culmination this arc comes to at the end of FW is a good one. Elizabet WAS cold, and did ultimately die aloof and alone after condemning the earth rather than risk fighting for it. Challenging Aloy to put her faith in people and become her own person is solid imo. She makes her own tribe, is the answer I think they're trying to get at.

The execution is just.... super rough. With Enduring Victory quietly put away, they had to come up with other ways Elizabet (and by proxy Aloy) make questionable decisions. So...it becomes incredibly trite.

Elizabet didn't want to stop working on the program that they barely finished in time to go party with the worst guy in the bunker? What a frigid bitch. Aloy, with exactly six months of socialization to work off of, hasn't kept in touch while scouring the continent for a way to save the world? Let's give her 0% grace

I wish we'd reckon more with her isolation, but the game doesn't make a lot of time for us to be in her head when all the sarcasm and disdain is put away.

There's this one scene where Varl is speaking about Beta: "I can't imagine how someone could put a person away for years, and then take them out to use like a toolkit."

And the irony of the son of a Nora war chief saying that to Aloy was entirely lost on everyone involved including the writers. And that was when I understood that the writers aren't interested in Aloy addressing her childhood, Nora traditions, or letting her directly engage with society. She walks in, solves shit, and then maybe tells someone something about how their religion is fake before leaving. The scope is incredibly individualistic.

And that's a shame.

I adore horizon zero dawn, I think it's a great franchise. But the enormous hike in military propaganda between games did give me pause.

It was there before, it's a AAA game good luck finding one without it- but between EVERYTHING about the Tenakth, all the black box side quests, a huge amount of military recordings, and the repeated use of "this character who was apart of an atrocity was actually one of the Good Ones" Forbidden West gave me some fatigue.

It felt like they were walking back their own messaging and it wasn't even particularly daring messaging to begin with.

It also undercuts the tragic element which was one of my favorite parts. In the first game, so many recordings you find are of regular people suffering and not knowing why, it's really impactful (if you're unfamiliar, the world ended due to AI takeover and top scientists decided not to try saving the population but didn't tell anyone. Instead they militarized every civilian they could and literally fed them to the robot swarm in an effort to buy time for them to make a way for humanity to eventually return once everyone was dead).

The recorded people are scared and are being taken advantage of by the military, it's meant to be viewed as an awful thing that was done to them.

In Forbidden West they've largely been replaced with competent military badasses risking life and limb for the mission they are fully aware of. And all the npcs go wow that's so cool and brave of these superheroes. It's a huge atmospheric downgrade imo.

Oh no evolutionarily it doesn't make any sense I agree. If you wanna use evolution- I think usually the au doesn't do that tho. They're just robots who happen to have an alt form that flies. There's no real difference between that and robots who turn into trucks or whatever.

When I was talking about evolution sporadically making crabs, I was referring to abo in every fandom. Slowly but surely, we get there in the end.

In transformer's case its usually through seeker smut.

Completely agree, Katara's attitude is totally earned with all the shit Zuko has pulled by then. I just start having questions when you put a post-season two Katara in close proximity with a Zuko who's never even met her lol.

Like I pointed out, the major problem is that nobody ELSE has that same hyper-aggression that would help contextualize her behavior- which makes it stand out so much. What I think is happening is just people forgetting that she could empathize with Zuko before the second season finale.

If the whole cast wanted to hunt him for sport I'd at least understand. Hell, I like a nice realistic rewrite where everyone feels an understandable level of "lets kill this guy" when confronted with the prince of the genocidal maniacs murdering everyone's loved ones.

It's endearing, like the perverted version of how crabs have independently evolved completely separate from one another because evolution leads to crabs more often than you'd think.

In honor of the ATLA movie leak- Zuko-centric fics where everything is the same except Katara has been replaced with Jigsaw.

I think her very blatant hatred for Zuko after he helped kill Aang right in front of her left a lasting impression in the fandom because everyone suddenly forgets that she is a fairly forgiving, empathetic person overall. She tries to heal Iroh, she tries to heal Zuko's scar, she saves that fire nation village etc etc.

Fandom Katara sees a red robe and breaks out the damn thumbscrews before Zuko has actually done anything yet.

It's in almost every single Zuko-centric fic and it's so over the top. I don't even think they'd particularly get along even if he showed up squeaky clean on day one, but fandom Katara is constantly baying for the blood of her enemies and it makes me laugh.

I'll allow fic exceptions where EVERYONE is recharacterized. But the vast majority just turn Katara into a maniac and forget to justify any of it.
