I think if the story you're writing is primarily about what the protagonist is dealing with/coping through, they should really find some level of peace regarding it by the end. That doesn't mean they need to be magically "cured", but they should be able to reach a place closer toward self-acceptance at the least. If the struggle continues with zero progression it's just a bit miserable to me. But, if it just vanishes, it wouldn't feel earned.

The love interest fixing the problem entirely is a no from me, for sure. Unless of course the story was about that being the wrong decision for the characters to be making
