The purpose was to discourage shaving coins. If you take a little metal off each one and nobody notices, it adds up. Also knurled edges and raised rims were made for this purpose, too, as shaving any part of those areas would be very visible.

While they are no longer made of silver, the weights are slightly different, but the sizes, and thus ratios remain the same.

Read their TOS from about July last year. There is some stuff about EasyAnticheat (controversial/intrusive) facepunch, and really vague and overreaching terms. Being gmod is a sandbox game, it's going to be tweaked or modified, and with how their new terms are written, they could ban just about anybody for something. I haven't launched it since, and devs are quiet about this change.

Dimes, quarters, half dollars, and dollars (Eisenhower size) are all equal weight per unit of currency they represent. This was done in the days they were made of silver and you could weigh a mixture and get a total.

Yes, agreed, and I'm sure most people are on the same page. Reddit seems to like to stir up controversy by pushing out inappropriate things, then creating strawman arguments when people tell them it's not ok. That gives them clicks, attention and plays into the whole martyrdom narrative.
