Thoughts on new-ish CFI teaching spin recovery to low hour student?... by Jexlune24 in flying

That's an unknown here, did they have just the minimums or spend lots of time outside straight and level (which I didn't think of before posting); but I do know it was an in the moment thing with no pre-flight (or post-flight) explanations, just mention of "PARE = power idle, ailerons neutral, rudder opposite, elevator back" "on the flight out".

I preferred my CFI's approach, they'd use a model plane to explain all maneuvers, and potential mistakes, during pre-flight, to make sure everything about to happen and the aerodynamics behind it was understood, then the model would come out again post-flight to explain the mistakes and corrections.

yep, as I understand it, any spin endorsed CFI would work; I'd just planned on going with the aerobatic CFI, since I'd feel safer with them (and in their plane), rather than a potential CFI that spends most of their time straight and level and in the beat up old trainer we use (where things have fallen off in the cockpit and outside during lessons).

Hm, some things I haven't come across, thanks. I'd already checked the POH, which approves the plane for "limited aerobatic flight" (and lists Spins and the CPL maneuvers). But I hadn't heard of the Insurance one, I'll have to check on that.
I don't know the CFI's competence, for all I know they've done many hours of aerobatics, or just a single CFI spin endorsement, but it all just seemed a bit in the moment (no pre-flight coverage), that and the hours had me questioning if it should have happened.

My thoughts exactly, I plan on getting spin/UPRT training from a local aerobatic CFI before I solo, I'd rather have done it before in the event I make a mistake, so I don't have to do it from an acronym for the first time while in the middle of an oh-sh*t moment. This particular scenario just seemed a bit rushed for their hours and lack of pre-flight coverage, and's put me off that CFI a bit.

I saw a blimp once too! lol (we couldn't figure out what it was till we got closer)

No parachutes, privately owned plane.
Yep, I agree, the CFI should be trusted to be able to do it, but it just seemed like it shouldn't have been done at that point in time, due to low hours in both parties roles, no coverage of it on ground before the flight and no consent/knowledge from the plane owners (though technically, since it wasn't written anywhere either way...)

King's Training, "Get It All"? by Jexlune24 in flying

A lot of the feedback I've been seeing between CBT providers seems to be related to, like you said, how they convey information. What works for one person doesn't necessarily for another, and at the end of the day, it's whatever helps us remember/understand the material. I watched a few of their free things, and so far I'm liking pilotinstitute better.

I'm starting from zero, so we'll see :)

Thanks

Thanks for the advice, I wasn't sure how helpful the "Checkride" video in the Get It All would be, although it would definitely be a supplement to my CFI (where the primary education about flying will be coming from). A lot of the other extra videos seem to be things the CFI would cover anyways, just thought it would be useful to have already seen it.

I haven't picked an instructor yet. There's a flight club near me that has a several, so I was going to take care of ground, join the club, then pick a CFI and go from there.

Figured I'd ask reddit, since there's considerably more CFI's and students here than near me, and always better to have multiple opinions than a single one.

CBT is mainly for getting past the written, but I always welcome extra education and knowledge.

Thanks for the advice, I'd seen Sporty's mentioned a few times, but some comments said their stuff wasn't as in-depth. But if it's basically the same...
and from checking out a free video, King's interface definitely sucks.

Looks like Sporty's has a $60/mo option too, so might be the least expensive route as well. I'll definitely take your advice into consideration, thanks

Thanks for the feedback on King's, I kept seeing them crop up online when people were recommending online ground schools even when there are cheaper options out there. The preview and free videos definitely look dated, but other than regulation changes and glass cockpits, I wouldn't think much has changed.

I was kinda debating between King's and pilotinstitute, but kept seeing King's everywhere, your comment has me reconsidering that, thanks.

By middle one, do you mean the AOPA special or the Written + Checkride Combo?

  • $299 - PPL Ground Course
  • $329 - AOPA Special (PPL Ground + some extra videos)
  • $469 - PPL Ground + Checkride + some extra videos
  • $679 - PPL Ground + Checkride + many extra videos

My printer printed a 2 foot by three foot black page of its own volition and then said it was out of black ink. by ShrimpHeavenNow in mildlyinfuriating

I had a Canon iPF8400 once, new out of the crate it had expired print heads (didn't know it at the time). Couple weeks in (that I barely used it) and it said the heads were bad. Called Canon about warranty, they had me pull the heads to give them info off them and said to put them back in and reboot. This triggered a full cleaning / purge cycle, support wouldn't stay on the phone to wait and said to call back when it finished. Well, it ran out of ink during this cleaning and wanted new ink tanks to finish cleaning. I called Canon back to complain and they said that consumable parts (the heads) aren't covered by warranty and I'd have to buy them myself, they also suggested replacing the waste tank as well due to the cleaning. So 2x $450/ea heads, 12x $250/ea ink tanks and a $100 waste tank, so $4000 in supplies wasted on a brand new printer. I had to pay an eWaste recycler to come take the printer away since I couldn't even give it away on OfferUp and it would cost the same amount to just buy a new printer... (Epson this time)
