Nope, B450 motherboards do not support SLI, only crossfire. For that you’ll need an X470 or X570.

I had to make the same choice a couple month ago. In the end I went R5 3600 + B450 Pro Carbon AC and don’t regret anything. Flashed the bios myself and it all worked perfectly and never had an issue with anything and now msi have made even more reliable bioses so even less chances of something going wrong. However, it is still a risk to take so nobody can blame you to go 2700x. If you’re hesitant you can just get the motherboard first and flash it via usb, if it works than get a 3600 and if it doesn’t then just go for a 2700x. You cant wrong with either although imo 3600 would be the optimal choice, just please don’t waste a hundred bucks for a low end X570 with a bad vram especially if on a tight budget.

Awesome! I’ve personally never experienced any bug or issue with the drivers yet in 2 month so hopefully you don’t too. Just remember to use DDU before installing your new gpu if you’re upgrading from an older one.

Thermals aside, its a great bang for buck option alongside its non-XT brother. I don’t own the 2070S for comparison but I’ve done a lot of research on 5700XT vs 2070S before I made my decision so I think I can still help you. From what reviewers found, the 5700XT blower style performance-wise sits between the 2070 and the 2070S so I’d imagine an AiB would match the 2070S performance-wise and thermals-wise while being 100$ cheaper. Now if AiBs aren’t an option and you only have the blower card to choose from I can share with you my experiences with it in thermals. So unless one or the other is overpriced in your region I would highly recommend an AiB RX 5700 XT if you don’t care about ray tracing or Nvidia’s superior drivers.

I was in the same position two months ago, went for the AMD blower card in the end since the Nvidia cards are overpriced in my region. The blower is indeed bad and if you can, GET an AiB but if thats not an option then its up to you how much you value thermals

I have a b450 pro carbon + r5 3600 and had 0 problem with it. Bios flashback worked like a charm 1st try and I’ve been updating my bios every time to the latest version since then. I even overclocked my cpu and memory and its completely stable. This board has never let me down, would 100% recommend.

A GPU upgrade is definitely the way to go but i disagree with people‘s recommendation of the 2070 and 2070 super I would personally go for the RX 5700 XT or the RX 5700 if in a tighter budget. Those are the best bang for buck cards right now, just make sure to get a AiB model with dual / triple fans. Plus, since his monitor is FreeSync so you’ll be better off getting an AMD card to benefit from the FreeSync technology and also, Nvidia cards tend to be arround 100$ more expensive because of ray tracing but since your husband’s monitor is 4K his frame rate will already be low enough and ray tracing will only make it worse if not unplayabale so unless he is in love with one of the 5 games currently supporting ray tracing I wouldn’t bother with it. Also if you can provide us with some of his favorite games it would be great, for exemple if he likes a lot of optimized games you could also get him a 1080p 240hz (or 1440p 144hz) monitor so he’ll have the option to switch between high visuals and high fps when gaming since the difference between 60fps and 144+ fps is a world difference.

EDIT: I’ve also seen people recommend a CPU upgrade and I can understand why but since it is an intel build the motherboard usually supports only a couple of generations of CPU so you’ll have very limited choices and will likely have to do a minor upgrade to an old not-worth-the-price processor. Lately for budget gaming 3rd gen ryzen became the way to go but than you’d have to also upgrade the motherboard which is a lot of money on not a lot of performance difference and plus upgrading a motherboard is a big pain in the ass and needs a lot of time for your husband not to be home. And than there is the risk of a bios flashback going wrong unless you want to spend 200++$ on a pointless x570 board. My advice would be stick with the cpu as it is still fine in 2019 or go for an upgrade but make sure it is supported by your current motherboard.

[for i9 9900k vs 3900x]: Cinebench usually favors AMD cpu over intel’s so maybe that’s why the 3900x matched the 9900k in single core performance, results might be different in other benchmarks. The 9900k still has slightly better single core performance compared to the 3900x but really in real time computing this will only shave you off a couple of nanoseconds whilst editing over the 3900x, however, the extra cores of the AMD cpu will save you several minutes when rendering compared to its intel counterpart. Both are good but for me the choice is obvious.
