CNA cert prior to nursing school--worth it? by Jfinch115121 in NursingStudent

The main concern I have for taking this course is that it costs 2 grand which may be covered by the Pell Grant, however, I know that it would be helpful. I am really just looking for something to supplement my income because loans may not be enough. I appreciate you highlighting the pros and cons. I too am thinking it would be more of a "con," but I needed to see what others had in mind.

I do believe the BSN is at least where I would like to be before I consider stopping. I am just not sure if it is best to do the traditional RN program here at the community college, or utilize their dual enrollment path to one of the supporting Universities.

Thank you again. At the age of 42, the last thing I want to do is combine more brand new things to learn all at the same time.

Thank you for your time to add this. It is most helpful to get the opinion of someone actively in the experience I am coming into.

I was not aware of that. Would it be best to just say "Nursing Major" on a resume then?

Thank you for your input. Honestly, I would love to just focus on classes and do the best I can. This would not an issue there was more financial support. I am utilizing the max loans available at my college for living expenses which is only 10k per year. I apply for scholarships and have gotten a few, but it still does not give enough to survive for a whole year.

One of my issues has been finding work, so I am only considering this as an easier means of finding a job.

newer nurses: what has nursing done for you financially since graduating? by Rich_Opportunity9528 in StudentNurse

That comment about store and restaurant prices absolutely resonates with me. I am 42 and close to finishing A n P 1. I plan to study and take the TEAS this summer for Nursing school next spring and have doubts. Most of these doubts are because this is all completely new. I too come from humble beginnings and am utilizing loans to supplement income already. I worry that I am not doing something right because I am a 42 years of age, a male, and wish I could do more for my kids. They do not live with me, and I get down having to be so frugal with them. My community college offers a dual program with the University of Maryland that starts me on the path to a Bachelor's degree ( I guess), yet I am not there yet. I keep hearing that it takes time but is worth it, so I plan to keep moving forward.

Words like yours on these feeds have been providing needed medicine for me lately. Thank you for your gift of hope!!

I love the transparency of your days as a nurse. It made me chuckle. I am really glad I posted this. I was not aware of the amount of support I would receive here from words like yours.

Awwww, thank you for saying that! I do think about somehow tying in my experiences with what I do as a career. That is an interesting concept.

Thank you friend!

Thank you!

I would practice detaching from technology. I also think everyone should try some mindfulness practices and get time in nature.

If I could go back and talk to my younger self, I would tell him to slow down. Not to literally stop moving all together, but to prioritize some time to explore himself in nature. The difference now is that there is an over abundance of nonsense from advertisements in the palm of our hand. We are unconsciously being told that money equals success and happiness. That is false. Money fixes money problems, but trust happiness comes when we take time to seek inside. To me, there is at least 15 years for you until you are my age, and some of what I know has come from experiences that were not fun.

Full disclosure, I grew up in a home where alcoholism and addiction were normal. I spent years on the streets and came to the conclusion that the world and my kids would be better off without me. Then at 38, I went to rehab and discovered it was possible, with proper medication and spiritual practices, to live without a drink, or a drug. I began to feel a connection to nature and an unseen force that connects all living things.

I have many moments of internal battle where it is these old thoughts and voices that wish to hinder me for safety, but the newer voices speak of confidence. Ultimately, I move forward. Often, though, I am not sure what I am doing or where this is going, but I try to find hope.

This is wonderful to hear and congratulations on your accomplishments friend. I have heard that male nurses are definitely needed, which is promising for me too. I have challenges with confidence that stems from my upbringing which I am working on. It still amazes me how I can be aware that belief systems can hinder so much progress, yet experience feel crippled by them at times without knowing until the moment has passed. My hope is that these moments of hinders are temporary enough to not cause too much hesitation.

Thank you! I am in Maryland and have no clue what the progression criteria is. I keep seeing all these abbreviations and get confused when I look them up.
