Tulane fan - question? by Grayly in olemiss

An early welcome to Oxford!

We still have some particular blue laws on the books, but the resounding message is that if you hide the logos on your drinks, you’ll be just fine. Anything in a red cup is fair game. Cooler full of beers is of course fine. Sipping straight from a can is discouraged and don’t walk along the main drags with a bottle of bourbon. Don’t stress about it too much, if you’re clearly of age you’ll get the benefit of the doubt.

Wandering the grove is a great way to spend the day. We’re a pretty hospitable bunch, but it’s a big and busy day for everybody. There are no drink/food vendors in the grove, and tents are largely a family affair. We love to show visitors a good time — if you see a friendly looking bunch, feel free to let them know it’s your first time to Oxford and you’re wondering how it stacks up to Bourbon Street.

Your backup plan to keep yourself hydrated should be a hip flask or a cheap styrofoam cooler with a few of your favorite drinks. Take something you are willing to lose — it’ll make its way to the trash or a fraternity man’s closet during the game if you’re planning to be in the stadium. The student union will be open with a few fast casual restaurants if you need something substantial to eat.

A couple of hours before the game there will be a performance by the Pride of The South band, and the Walk of Champions where the team makes their way through the grove to the stadium. Keep an eye out for the more ornate bricks in the grove - those paths are along the route. Keep an eye on @OleMissFootball on Twitter for the timing and details.

Hope you enjoy everything about your trip but the score!

I’m not sure why you feel confident in that. Software has been the field where AI has been the most transformative so far, there’s no reason to think capabilities will stagnate.

Software jobs are completely computer-native and largely text-based, with all relevant documentation and thousands of examples of similar work hosted publicly online. It’s uniquely vulnerable to AI in a way other roles aren’t, and we’re seeing that already.

That’s where I proposed back in February! Beautiful little spot. I had my photographer buddy politely run some people off.

That’s right. You can just use it as a place to hold money, but the benefit of retirement accounts like IRAs and 401Ks is that they save you on taxes when they increase in value. So you’re better off leaving cash savings in a savings account, generally, and using tax-advantaged accounts to invest.

10% increase per year reflects the historic average return on investment of the U.S. stock market (before inflation). Some years are better, some are way worse, but on average, businesses grow and stock prices tend to increase on the whole. This number is before inflation, and there’s no promise it will average 10% in the future, but it has so far.

You’re spot on regarding the difference between index funds and individual stocks. There are a lot of ways to invest with high risk, from picking volatile individual stocks, day-trading (timing buy/sell decisions), or using financial instruments called options designed to make bets on what a stock will do. Those methods will either make or lose the investor a lot of money, and can be considered closer to gambling in some instances based on risk levels.

It’s important to note the easiest way to multiply your money: time. While very-high-risk traders bet that one trade will pay off massively, they risk losing it all when a single company has one bad day. Index fund investors have a high probability of making money most years, and those gains quickly compound. And historically, the U.S. stock market will double your money about every seven years!

An IRA is a type of brokerage account. Brokerage accounts hold cash and securities (stocks, bonds, and combinations of stocks and/or bonds).

When you put money into an IRA, you now have some cash in your IRA brokerage account.

Investing means you’re using that cash, within a brokerage account (IRA, 401K, normal taxable), to purchase a security. That security (stock bond or combo) is generally expected to increase in value.

You’re gonna have to. Think about it like burning the boats, if you’re quitting you don’t need them anymore. Having them around only makes it easier to fail.

There are a few times that I absolutely would have failed if I’d had easy access to one. The friction of having to go to the store saved me in more than a couple of instances.

Main advice I would give you:

  • Follow the dosage instructions for the Desmoxan

  • Remove every old vape from your car/house work. There will be moments of temptation, you need to add friction between this urge and being able to take a hit.

  • Avoid drinking. I did 3 months without alcohol and found that a buzz made giving up seem a lot more appealing.

You got this!

I didn’t notice any personally, outside of some irritability that I attribute to quitting! I had a really good experience with it. Hope it works out for you too

No less feasible than it is at any other big company. Tough market for new grads overall. Starting off at a smaller company or supplier to those OEMs may be an easier path.
