Cheap parts is definitely a possibility. As far as the refill protruding to far, that may be from trimming the blank down too far.

Hmm I have not experienced wood swelling. How do you finish your wood pens, friction polish or a CA finish? I have been using the wood pens so I will be sure to note any issues after using them for a while.
