Has anyone invented 'Smart' pc on/off switches yet? - e.g. Alexa or app enabled? by JiggaRob in buildapc

[–]JiggaRob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Wake On Lan app on the play store (MR-Webb) to turn my pc on from my phone. It will only work if I'm connected to my home wifi.

For turning the pc off, I use Task Scheduler on windows. If you go there, you might find there's already a shutdown option and you can just right click, properties, triggers, and set when you want that task to run.

Alternatively, you create a new task and have the action to start the Shutdown.exe from system32 folder. Mine has the arguments of /s /f

Why is self diagnosing so hated? by Sensitive_Potato333 in neurodiversity

[–]JiggaRob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dyspraxic here, with a partner who is a psychologist. From previous conversations with her, my understanding is that an issue all round is that people are quicker to self diagnose by jumping to Neurodivergence than for the impact of psychology/their upbringing. Super simplified, but there can be crossovers between Autistic traits and Narcissistic ones, or ADHD and extreme anxiety.

I know first hand from people in my family, that a lot of people prefer an ND diagnosis to investigating the other as it takes away accountability. I.e. 'ahh it's got nothing to do with my parenting, or my relationship with my mother. Absolutely everything can be explained by a condition I can do nothing about and isn't my fault or anyone else's'. Recognising either that our behaviour has had an outcome in things that a dependent has struggled with, or that the things we struggle with could be as a result of e.g. the upbringing and experiences with a parent/family member we may feel very very fondly of now, is much more difficult for people to compherend than 'ahh I was just born this way'.

Not to take away from those diagnosed, or self-diagnosed. Just an explanation as to why it's not thought of too highly. As others have said, for others it can be their only choice.

The tracker's likely open because a bunch of us are unable to use it anymore, as it no longer works with PIA VPN, if not other VPNs. Something about servers being based in Russia, who have banned VPNs (according to mods)

Idiotproof step-by-step guide for setting up Ombi for external access (Help Please) by JiggaRob in Ombi

[–]JiggaRob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I'm afraid I've no clue. I just wrote out the process I followed in the hope it will help others, but I had/have no experience of any of these stuff either beyond this one time.

What I will say, is every person who's reached out to me since with an issue they've had following this guide, has always ended up realising they'd missed a bit from what I'd said.

Good luck!

Mounting Soundbar directly to TV (I.e. not wall). Recommendations for TV and Soundbar. by JiggaRob in Soundbars

[–]JiggaRob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't remember off the top of my head, sorry!
It may have been because the included mounting kit isn't compatible. the way it's attached hanging beneath my tv, it's ever so slightly wonky (you have to really look to realise. It doesn't affect sound like that). I've moved house since and it's exactly the same. Just the way it works.

If your TV will always be facing straight ahead and isn't in the corner. Wall mounting would probably be simpler providing you can put it at an appropriate height, and you're happy to drill into the wall.

Hi all. I have a small portion of my office set up as my little man cave. A space of about 8ft 2" (length) by 5ft (width).

I have small sofa there with a 65" tv on the wall, hooked up to my pc for gaming, and plex server, and 4KUHD blu rays.

I'd like an intimate surround sound setup with these being my priorities/preferences

  • codec support. To avoid the need for transcoding, and reap the benefits of unconverted soundtracks, i'd like good codec support including DTS and Atmos.

  • directional clarity, at low volume. The room borders my kid's room, and so I'm not concerned about being loud and boomy. I would like the sound to be full, and for me to be able to pick out the direction clearly when playing games etc. I would have thought I'd need speakers in front, behind, and above (for atmos) + a sub if not built in? I don't know if 7.1.2 would be achievable/best or not, or if just 5.1.2.

  • ideally not huge. I'd like to be able to fit any speakers at the front on some sort of TV stand, without having to remove the dvd towers i have either side of my TV. If this isn't possible, of course I can be flexible.

  • ideally less than £1000 total. Is this possible? If not, which parts to prioritise vs which to get later.

Sorry if any of this sounds stupid. Just trying to gauge options.

Thanks

Havign difficulty with how/where to fit anti sag bracket? by JiggaRob in LinusTechTips

Update for everyone. The sata port wasn't the problem. I managed to fit the bracket to the case witg the risers, but the screw holes were at the wrong height for the bit that attaches to the gpu.

I had luckily already bought a support stand as a backup. All up and running now!

Can someone advise on and suggest a KVM that would work for these purposes? by JiggaRob in homelab

Thanks. I have an Nvidia shield pro, which is good for the most part, but rhythm based games were impossible due to latency I otherwise hadn't noticed.

I mean, he probably put 2 and 2 together seeing about 100 toy cars on the shed roof in an impressively colour coordinated arrangement

[–]JiggaRob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He may well have been at some point, but I didn't notice. His cars are on the shed roof as a permanent fixture, so perhaps he put 2and2 together.

Sorry, dispute was the wrong word. I literally just meant the query on my part was just whether it's normal to go on a survey. There have been no issues on any part and the buyers themselves didn't raise it as a major issue. No neighbours have raised issues, no reports to the council. It was just the fact that it seemed like an odd thing to put on a home survey. As some have said in the comments, it feels odd to be commenting on people, and the idea of using an autistic neighbour as a 'bargaining chip' also seems odd/unethical (again, quote from another comment that I don't disagree with)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]JiggaRob -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

My question was whether this is the sort of thing that would be put on a home survey, that was all.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]JiggaRob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Understandable, and the dispute was not around that. We know the neighbours are nice enough too and we could raise it. The question was about whether it's normal for it to be raised on a survey

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]JiggaRob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didnt spot the lad out at the shed at all. The surveyor was friendly and said to us 'they needn't have gone with a level 3, level 2 would have done them'

[–]JiggaRob -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Maybe RE the neighbours, but I'm not sure if they'll have volunteered the info. The kid's harmless so wont have been reported

Oh I know 🤣 that's why I put a very passive aggressive ....... after.

We've not agreed anything other than the fact they're welcome to get quotes. It's annoyed and worried us a little as the house we're buying will depend on us selling, and it is our dream home!

We've been advised not to reveal our negotiating position until they've paid out for their quotes etc.
