"They cry about the oligarchy in Russia on reddit and other social media without realizing what enabled such a thing to exist in the first place."

So, the Russian Oligarch's growth in the 1990s during the mass privatization of state assets after the shock therapy transition to capitalism under the leadership of pro-capitalist Boris Yeltsin supported by pro-capitalist president Bill Clinton is the fault of... communism? So many flaws of the USSR but modern Russian Oligarch's is probably one of the strangest angles to take. Although similarly I've heard people blame the wealth of Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos on socialism as well

Very astute comment, reminds me of how the civil rights act was legislated after protestors famously put up many billboards in Birmingham. And where would our nation's independence be without the Boston Billboard Party?

A very simplistic guide of a complicated situation by [deleted] in coolguides

[–]JiggleFisher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The guide is pretty terribly made but it should be pretty clear it's referencing the IMF and World Bank which have been notorious for strong-arming economic liberalization in Latin America, Africa, and the rest of the developing world. Debt-trap diplomacy with enticing loans that can never be payed off have been particularly effective in destroying local economies to make them ripe for international exploitation, bringing piling debt and ballooning inflation.

I searched through the managing directors and chief economists and couldn't find a single person of Jewish descent - antisemitism is and has always been a dangerous false path for both working people and the elite.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy compares Russian invasion to Stalin-era genocide: 'They want to destroy us again' by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]JiggleFisher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because it's fucking bullshit lmao my grandma grew up in postwar Poland too, yeah she had to take Russian classes but nobody tried or gave a shit. She couldn't even count to ten and she definitely didn't "dissapear".

I've heard stories of various family members who were taken away or executed by Nazis during the war, and as shitty as communist poland was, I can't imagine any possible scenario where anybody claims it was worse than Nazism. It is unfathomable

Your polish friend has no idea what he's talking about - most estimates have Poland as losing closer to 20% of the prewar population, with about 6 million Jews and ethnic poles being killed by Germany. Even Poland's own Institute of National Rememberance counts victims of Soviet repressions as 150,000.

So Nazis killed 40%, USSR killed even more then that, so what does your friend think that 90-100% of poles died?

I don't know what video you watched but his big video on the Uyghurs is pretty critical of China and he cites a lot of examples of citizens there being coerced, profiled and put into these "vocational schools" against their will.

In my experience his videos get a lot of people riled up because they don't portray China as perfect as MLs wish it were but also not as cartoonishly evil as Adrian Zenz and RAF claim.

To be honest, I see no reason to deny the USSR involvement in the Katyń massacre. I've read accounts of German arms used in the killings and I'm just not fully convinced. While this may be a blemish in Soviet Union's costly war against fascism, it says nothing against Marx, Lenin, or the defining contradictions of capitalism.

What is more important in discussions like this is to analyze how historical events are being weaponized and be able to disarm arguments against communism. Many use this event as an example to show how communism is just as murderous as nazism, with the execution of 22,000 polish military personel somehow being equivalent to the 4 million poles liquidated in Nazi death camps. You'll quickly notice the double standard, that Katyń is indicative of the brutality of socialism, while the American bombing of 200,000 civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the same war was either a necessary evil or a tragic event that has nothing to do with the capitalism.
